It probably varies depending how fanatical the person is and the format they are using. When I started out capturing MJPEG I did it at 2.3-3megs/sec which gave me about 600 megs per video. As I went on my standards changed, now the final render of my videos is typically 1.4-1.8 gigs. I've deicded that drive space is cheap but my time isn't ... so I don't want my master to have much if any loss due to compression.

Mine usually run around 1 to 1.5 GB.

1.6 gigs, I encode in Mpeg though so that reading is what my program predicts the file size to be. It's often only off by .05 gigs in either direction though.

All of mine are always over 1 gig! Ranging from 1 to 1.6 gigs. (man.. I need more hard drive space... Goes out and buys another one...)

I capture at mjpeg at 6005kps a sec (604 x 464 Studio DC10+ settings) and I usually encode in either ligos or huffy. Ligos tends to give me 200mb avi files for something that's minute and a half long. Huffy is around 400-500mb and no compressor gives me a gig or 2.

With the type of compression and frame size I use a 4 minute long video would be about 1.2 gigs. Huffyuv in YUY2 mode, 640 x 480 @ 24 fps. Of course the source files for my last vid took up about 9 gigs (same formula) but quality always has priority over drive space.

Do you peole who use HuffYUV encode to RGB or use the convertYUY2 option?

I've found the YUY2 option paired with "best" compression gives reasonable data rates (generally a good bit smaller than RGB.) If my understanding of it all is correct it's still practically lossless in that it doesn't introduce any grain ... just a small amount of of color fading or shifting which isn't really noticable (this color loss is from the video being converted between color spaces.)

Wow, I haven't seen Alumini is a long time...where have you been? Wait, I'll just checked out your site for that info.

Anyway, to the topic at hand. I haven't ripped any serious DVD footage yet, but I do have a cople gigs of Counter-strike footage that I recorded. 1.6 gigs for about 3 minutes. Resolution: 1024 x 768, but I had to change that to a much more manageable resolution.

Aluminum: yes, you should use YUY2 mode, as it compresses significantly better than the RGB. And yes, it is also lossless in that it introduces no artifacts, only loses some color info. However when you compress your video for distribution, mpeg or divx or whatever you will use are going to through out that color info anyways, so you arent really losing anything at all by using YUY2.

I use HuffYUV. Will look into YUY, though, thanks for the suggestion.

Yupp, like I said, YUY2 mode
mostly because it compresses 2x more than rgb, is generally lossless unless you're recompressing several times, and because that way the vid never leaves the YUV colorspace except during editing.

o err.. we're all talking about huffyuv, its just theres a YUY2 compression mode (under the RGB compression method drop-down box) which yields twice the compression without any real quality loss.
