You'd probably want something that can be switched to a RPC-1 version (by firmware or hidden features), since that way it'll allow you to see Region 2 discs (from Japan).

I just got a Sony DDU1621 (it's decent and its firmware can be flashed) for around $50 :)

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy a Creative DVD drive. I doubt that would even be an option since they're so overpriced, but they are completely USELESS.

I got a Pioneer 106S (I think that's the right #) to replace it, but since I don't have a working computer at the moment, I've only used it once.

Most drives are just as functional as the next. My brother has an Acer one and it's never given him problems. My roommate in college got an off brand one and even that one has worked flawlessly. Best to check online reviews, but Toshiba is also recommended by some of my friends.

I'd recommend either an ASUS or a Toshiba. Both are reliable, and both have a large fanbase - meaning that someone's taken the time to write regiob-removing firmware for many ASUS and Toshiba drives. :-)

You can get a drive by either company for $50 or less at newegg.com

I'd reccomend something really cheap like $38 16X DVD..... most likely it'd be noisy and slow to spin up....but $38 bucks..... man... .you can't beat that...

<A HREF=http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.a ... 30-010>Buy this Toshiba drive.</A>

$41 ($45 after shipping, it's an excellent drive, and it is flashable to remove the Region 1 setting.

I suggest a Liteon. The one I bought was only $50 and it works great.

I have an Artec 16x. I've had it since my birthday, it was $40 and $5 for shipping and handling. It's a very nice drive.
