This forum is for the general discussion of Anime Music Videos.

the purpose of an AMV..

"OPINIONS! AND QUICK COMMENTS, SO I CAN GET ATTENTION AND SO PEOPLE WILL THINK I AM COOL!!"

or

because I like making them, film, acting, editing, and various things like that have always been an interest for me, I figured AMV is a good place to start learning these things a bit better (maybe not acting, but film type stuff) its practice for when I want to move on to bigger things..

I guess I could always just take classes :P lol but this is much more fun :) plus this site is a great place to get brutal honest feed back... from both sides of the fence lol... it keeps my ego in check.

I think Vlad did a pretty good job at summing it up (bastard :P)

AMVs are a hobby, and people do them for different reasons. I do them because it's an artistic outlet, and I can't draw for shit. And as much as I'll complain about clipping, crazy editing etc. I still love seeing the final product, and even the process itself makes me warm and fuzzy on the inside (even if on the outside I'm smashing my computer to peices)

Other than that, I think of it as practice (in case I can ever get a job doing this shit) and an awsm way to procrastinate.

(oh, and it gives me an excuse to go to cons without having to dress up, or something  )

I do AMVs to make my e-dick bigger and harder. I also do them because for some reason people who would beat my ass for saying something will just laugh if I say the exact same thing using cartoons.

For me, it depends on the video. I've made vids that were geared to entertain (a small audience, sure, but still made with an audience in mind). I've made some that were meant to deliver a message, usually "I was depressed when I made this, not that you care" or "I'm in a good mood, you should be, too." I've done a few that were meant to shock/impress my friends. No matter why I decide to make a vid, though, I quit if I'm not enjoying myself - the editing/busy-work. I consider this a hobby, passing time doing something entertaining for me. If the end result also entertains others, cool.

On the flip side, I watch vids for entertainment.

I started making AMVs to learn how to use my editing software. It's now become one of my many hobbies, and yet another creative outlet (and I can draw). I just love learning how to do new things, and developing new talents.

QCs and OPs are nice, too, but not my motivation... ;)

I believe the question was what is the main purpose of an AMV, not the creation of an AMV. If you were asking what is the AMV's purpose, there are many solutions, though one could not answer them, for it is the AMV's role in society to provide such an answer. Had the question been what is the purpose of AMV creation, then you could give answers such as "to entertain myself" or "to masturbate onto the screen." However, the second answer could come from a different question, what is the purpose of WATCHING an AMV.

the functional purpose of the amv is to be watched and listened to. oops too literal.

how bout to provide a communicative medium whereupon the messenger (the amv creator) attempts to elicit some cognitive or emotional responses in the receiver (the amv viewer).

To piss off people like you, who try to assert things that they have no evidence for.

I'm going to agree with thy here. Stating that any form of creation serves one purpose and one purpose only is stupid and you probably didnt think much before posting that did you? Thats the problem with this place. Too many damn kids who talk shit, believing they're right and unable to accept that the magority of the time they're wrong.

The purpose of an AMV is to entertain. I think a lot of people see the word "entertain" as shallow and light but entertainment can be as deep and as meaningful as you want it.

"The Godfather" entertains.
"Dude Wheres My Car?" entertains.

Thats pretty much it. The AMV creator can have an agenda while making it, but the over arching umbrella thingy that all the concepts, editing styles, gimics, effects, cuts, songs, and animes fall under is entertainment.
