06 vma drama vid disscussion

Postby James Sharp » Sun Sep 25, 2005 1:47 am

I was thinking about the upcoming vma and wondering...Well more like dreaming if my video would make the cut for best sentimental video... i began to wonder what makes a great drama video. is it the effects? or the edit quality? or is it simply the feel of the video.... can a video with relitivly poor editing and a great feel of emotion win against a video with great editing and comparitivly little emotion. Is it the rarity of the song. or anime?.. or will it simply come down to one amv being released wayy before another. therefor wayy more attention goes to the older release. or finally is it in the pimpage... will an amv "pimp" win.. when a far more deserving non "pimp" goes unrealized. I guess what im getting at is do people judge with there heart or there eyes when it comes to drama/sentimental videos.

This is just another thread from a lonley person trying to interact with others. no need to flame.
Close calls are always the most exciting. Coming close is always the most dissapointing.

My newest vid:

I welcome any and all advice on how i can improve

egads. the vcas aren't for another 5 months.

the vcas are a popularity contest. if you want to win an award, make a really popular vid or self-pimp like hell. and not just on the forums. you'll need to find out where every member lives and send porn and candy everyday.

I think both are key. I can tell you for certain that a video with poor editing per se will NOT win. Poor-taste editing may pass, but then that's very subjective in itself. And what's a drama video without, well, drama?

But yea, popularity...

...give up if you really can't give the video a good spin in the wider circle. The terrible truth is, even if you gain a certain flair and notoriety within narrower and more dedicated fan circles, the majority of the votes rest with the 'silent majority' - people who aren't on the forums, people who are scarcely well-informed about ALL the videos out there, and people who by and large hold relatively mainstream perceptions shaped by fads and fashions before all else.

Perhaps the best way to turn things in your favour, aside from making an outright pop-out crowd-pleaser that strikes the fashion-of-the-moment in early 2006, is con exposure - con exposure, and more con exposure. Get your video out there. That may tip the silent-but-con-going crowd in your favour there, and that's already a plus.

Otherwise, it's really a tough and often un-objective game.

Thank you! This is exactly what I've been saying for a long time now. :)
