What do people think about a "fan" system? you click a button/link in the member's profile and can select options to be notified by e-mail when ever that member releases a new video/makes a journal entry.

i've been waiting 2 years to see this.

i'm against advertising though. if the costs - donations gap increases, how are you going to draw the line on when advertisements become too intrusive, tacky, or annoying?

Letting members buy banners sounds fun. $10 for a month's banner to your video info or your website or whatever. I read a site that does that when people want to plug their own sites without spamming the place. It seems less commercial than actual ads, for some reason. Eh, anyway.

Thought: can we pretty, pretty please have a torrent of the VCA nominees next year? Even one torrent per category? I tried to be a good honest voter and watch everything, point one, and point two, even as a no-name editor in the first round, my hits shot way up during the VCAs. I can't imagine how much traffic that equals multiplied by x videos and y downloaders.

I'd seed it 24 hours a day for a month, I promise. 8-)

OK, out of ideas now.

On the topic of donating, why not just have a limited number of videos per month, along with a download cap? However, although many people mean to donate, some are too lazy. Give them a gold name, pictures where they want. All the ideas are good, especially the banner one which allows a link to a site. And Bittorant is extremely fast, when you have a lot of seeders.

I donated and I would donate more if I had more money.....

....somewhere along this thread I read the idea of limitating the download speeds to 20kb for those who did not donate.......why not just do that Phade?

Sounds like a good plan IMHO 8-)

I'm wondering if there's any detailed stats on downloads. The example mentioned here is a good one where torrents would help enourmously. I'm thinking also that the number of downloads for a video would form a sort of "1/x" graph. By this I mean that for the first week or two a video has been released there's likely to be many people downloading and this number would rapidly drop off as time went on.

Would it be possible to actually switch videos between direct download and torrents (or dijjer or whatever) after some period of time?

As for my thoughts on capped bandwidth, I'm all for it. I've only got 256k (~25kb) broadband so I don't mind being capped at 20kb! :)

Bandwidth caps are a good idea,direct/inderect links aren't very good iv had better luck with local downloads, what about donating bandwidth and giveing extra options for people donate and people who dont like it tuff luck its all about the benjimens, now starting something like you have to besponsered and if you sponser a leacher you get band for so much time but also might increase the amount of different signup and side steps

It is incredibly sad people don't donate. I have never posted any videos on this site, but I'm an AMV addict who needs my fix and will do anything to get it. I remember the days before the org and finding good videos to watch was a time consuming and difficult process. Anytime someone got too popular, the vids were taken down due to excessive bandwidth on their servers. This site is a holy grail of getting vids and it would be terrible to see it go from lack of funds. I don't think people realize the time and effort that goes behind the scenes that enable all these leachers to use the site at their will.

Ads are a good thing for non-donators and YES they can be non-intrusive. My friend paid for his own private servers for years with non-intrusive and targetted ads that didn't take away from his layout or usability (and no popups). I'm all for it.

I'm also for limiting downloads for leachers...given the alternative (private servers and the hard search for privately hosted vids), if limiting helps, then that keeps the org up and running and keeps all of the community away from a scene of private servers with lower bandwidth limits.

Shops don't work, and I don't think paying for banners will work.

And for all of you who can't click on the silly "donation" tab in the menu to learn all the ways you can donate....that's just sad.

Also, perhaps have some sarcastic and harsh title in the members page for non-donaters that makes them feel guilty for being the pitiful leacher they are :P (nah, j/k, that's just mean).

Lets face it, advertising has proven itself to be the overall best way to generate cash. Two or three banners along the sides of the site could help greatly. Anything more would be a pain. If anything less is a pain then your just bitching. Short of making half the local vids exclusive to donators, nothing is going to persuade people to donate.

It might also be a good time to give the shop a second chance. It's nothing certian but considering the growth of activity over the past 2 years, their is definetly a good chance of the shop having at least a mild success. Also, how about selling official anime merchandice (dvd's, cloths, etc) through the site. I know the idea sounds a bit risque, but I doubt that thiers a single anime related company which isnt aware of this site, and I doubt there is one that gives the shit about the legality issues. It's a long shot, but how about send an email to ADV and see what responce they give? Off cource this idea could harm advertising revenue.

Minor FIX
Bannor ads might help pay for it but i would trust bannor ad with all the differnt spy ware and stuff going around and pop up arnt very attractive and make people with out blockers really lag i hate site that do that the donation page isnt so bad just try to get the european system for money up and going and you'll have all more funds but plz understan this still isnt enough if everyone sent a dollar to view the animes and list then we would have no problems youll never know how much you miss it till its gone

I dont know if 99% of the members are from other countries outside the US. But I can say that it is a big number (85%). Why not makethe payments more accesible for international members. Or explain what you mean by envelops and stamps. Please don´t assume that everyone is from the US and understands what you are talking about.

Why not use IPMO (International Postal Money Order) for me it is a really good system. You go to your postal office with any amout of money in any currancy and ask for a IPMO. An IPMO is a check that the postal office sends to a person (just like a letter or package) and they send it to the person you want. It is safer than sending money because the Postal Service is responsable if it gets lost. I dont know if all countries have that system, I only know that Canada, Japan and the US has it. It is a safer way to send money and you dont need a PayPal account, a bank account, checks, credit card you only need the money you want to send and the money for service changes.

Or try to figure out something that everyone can use (international people not only US) that is safe, easy, and cool. That is my suggestion to you.

How about if you don't donate something, at least a buck, you don't get to rate amvs with stars or opinions? In other words, if you don't support the site your oppinions don't matter?

If people start sending Phade Euro's, Franks, Lira, or even Iraqi Dinars, I'm sure Phade will find a way to deal with it. Admitedly, it's easier to get one type, but that's not the point. The real problem, isn't that it's difficult to go to your post office, and ask for a 3.00 money order, but that people just won't do it.

People that are freaky about using credit cards online can get 'one shot' cards with unique numbers that work just as well. People that are on a budget can mail in 1.00 on a peice of paper with their member name on it (in an envelope) for what .35 cents?

I can't think of a single person that can afford to have a computer with internet access that can't afford a couple of dollars.

I still favor enhancing the donators functions (like larger avatars, and pictures in journals, or description pages for example) with small pop up (like the one for the private message) reminding users that they "could" have the extra features, if they were to donate as little as 1.00, or 12 dollars, or whatever the amount cut off is.

Enhance the differences between donators and non-donators. Right now there is very little real difference, other than things like some search functions and the beg letter (which I still get even though I've donated).

Wait a minute, you can send donations through mail, too? If so, whats the adress, I'd be more than happy to contribute.
