Survey: One-Day Mini-Cons

Postby dokool » Sun Aug 14, 2005 3:27 pm

Questions for those who have attended mini-cons (Kosaicon, Harucon, Yasumicon, etc): How was it? What did you like? What didn't you like? Would you go back again?

Questions for those who haven't, but would consider attending a mini-con: What sort of events would encourage you to come out for one of these? Anything you'd want to see done differently from a weekend con? What's the farthest you'd drive for a mini-con with low registration (<$10?) How about a mini-con with free registration?

Please post your answers here or via any of the contact info in my profile.

Thanks,

Hmm. Doesn't look like the Tora Con website is up anymore...

Anyway, RIT is actually vaguely (within an hour?) close to the location for which I am asking these totally hypothetical questions about. (Translation: We have huge plans but nothing remotely close to concrete yet.) Mind if I IM you to discuss?

I believe I could get at least 10 people to come if given the proper time and enough advnced notice (maybe closer to 20 or 30). There are quite a few otaku @ UML and i'm willing to post fliers.

Given some very encouraging news from people within a certain sphere of influence, I'm going to do the unthinkable and *gasp* bump this thread.

Seriously, guys. Need your suggestions/ideas/whatever! I know y'all have plenty...

There's one at the Universiy of Michigan called Con Ja Nai that I'm on staff for. It's a one day event where pretty much what all you do is watch a selection of anime in one of 4 rooms, there's an AMV contest (ran by me and Kalium, mainly Kalium though), a cosplay contest, and there's an anime store nearby. Not to mention a raffle with some nifty things.

As far as I know, the only .org people I know of that go are me and Kalium. Details can be given later on.

Oh, I'm sure a few more show up. I know of at least one offhand.

Anyway, here's a few tips:
1) Have a staff room. Stock it with food and caffiene, bothe will be sorely needed.
2) I hope you like pulling a 20+ hour day, because you're going to.
3) Schedule things as well as you can, but allow some slack time.
4) Make sure you always have some staffers just around on standy, in case something comes up.

Anyway, I suspect actual significant panels and such are probably out of the question for a mini-con, but I would drive a couple hours to go to one, especially if it was free (which has logistical benefits, like no badging issues).

I'm not sure if Numa Rei No Con counts as a mini-con (over 2000 attendees this year), but it is free. It's outside of New Orleans, and I live in DC, but I wasn't the one who had traveled farthest. One guy came all the way from Europe - I forget where, exactly...

What area is this you are thinking? UML (if you mean UMass Lowell) is about 10 minutes from my house and I would go and bring friends, even if there was a price. I think a mini-con would be great, I wanted my anime club at school to hold one, but no, I would be the only one working on it -.- We have money that we don't use, so why not use it, hmmmm? But maybe if this happened my anime club could go there, which would be like.....20 or 30 people. And as far as events, a little cosplay event and AMV contest would be fun, and I would just enjoy a little day long thing. Panels if you want and an anime room or two, maybe, would be good too, but I am happy with a room and a few little contests and fun events. I am also willing to help anyway possible, so if you need my help, just ask.

Plans are now concrete. Announcements of the 'yay' variety will be posted within the next week or two to all the usual forums/communities/websites, including this one. Stay tuned.
