It is very much frowned upon. If you can cut out the subtitles and make it have good quality then its fine. However I really discoruage the use of fansubs because as soon as people see subtitles for the most part they end the video.

It's not only frowned upon because of the subtitles, but it is also frowned upon because you are too cheap a bastard to buy the dvds. The idea is that, even though you are illegally distributing your amvs, the least you could do is pay for the materials that you used.

Dude, if you're automatically replying to defend the practice when someone criticizes it, then I think you know it's a bad thing too.

Here's the cycle of ignorance:

1. Editor makes an AMV with fansubs
2. AMV looks bad
3. People give the AMV low scores
4. Editor complains
5. People tell him that if he doesn't want his video to look like shit, he should buy the DVDs.
6. Editor complains about cost
7. People point to editors more than willing to pay for R2s, box sets, etc.
8. Editor whines more.
9. GOTO 1

I can understand if you don't want to spend a lot of money if you want to make only a single project with that anime. But there is still a much better way than using fansubs - lend them from friends, rent them at a videotheque or something the like. If you want them for more than one project and still think it's too expensive, watch out for sales, check ebay etc.

Just to be pedantic here, quite a few shows, including some of the ever popular Naruto, just aren't avalable yet in other ways. Sometimes fansubs have got to be used, although even then it's better to try and get raws.

Good luck getting everything Naruto in raw :P

All kidding aside, renting might not always be an option. Where I live (small town in holland), there are no shops that carry anime dvd's like in the usa where they have suncoast, etc. We haven't even got a videotheque and our library doesn't have any dvd's for rent. Being in a small town as this, finding friends into anime is hard. There isn't even an anime-club at my university where I could find other fans. Hell, my primary dvd-shop is located in Belgium and they import from the US, adding to the costs.

Not to defend Rockermonkey, and everyone should purchase dvd's, but it's not always that simple.

Or sometimes you can act like me, and quietly wait till the show is released on DVD. It's not so hard, just keep busy editing with stuff that is already released. Sooner or later that favorite show of yours will appear in the stores and then you can work on something good, while at the same time you'll probably have made some progress in editing skills working on AMVs you made while waiting for that show. So all the better to make something good out of something you waited so long to obtain.

The truth is, no one really cares where your source came from if your AMV is THAT good. Take a look at Whisper of the Beast, I didn't find anyone complaining about his fansubs.

If you can buy the DVD's because you simply can afford them, then buy them (It takes less time and you get better results) but as someone said, sometimes fansubs are required, I mean, Where I live you can't simply buy anime DVD's (Hellsing at much) and I don't think any website can ship stuff over here, so yeah...
