What does it take?

This forum is for the general discussion of Anime Music Videos.

Who are you making these videos for mostly?

If for yourself, then none of this should matter. Show it to whoever comes upon it.

If for people here @ a-m-v.org , then post it once in the AMV Announcements, do opinion ops (though I am personally against that, seeing as most opinions seem to be rather pointless), and pimp in the IRC chat.

If for EVERYONE, then enter your videos into conventions and online contests. People remember the ones they like.

Want to know the secret of how to become better known no matter which one you choose? Make it good. And by good I don't mean average. I mean make it excellently edited and superbly synched. Make sure the audio is catchy and the video is known.

Though not ALL your ideas may not conform to such standards, welcome to the general life in entertainment(though, how much of a "life" is this? 8-) ). Do you think that all the stuff you see on T.V. is all thats out there? Of course not, we all know this. But studies show that whats on T.V. is what most people like. Same thing applies to your videos.

Its ENTIRELY possible to make a great video with a "meh" song and a "huh?" anime, but your work would have to overcome both of them. A video with a catchy audio and a known anime does not have to overcome them.

"If you build it (good), they will come" .

I can't remember what that was from, but I know its famous, or something.

I have a lot to say, but I'm going to try to keep this simple.

First off, to all of the people that I used as examples, I never meant any malice towards you. In fact, I used you as examples because I really respect your talent. I'm sorry if it ever came off as otherwise, because that wasn't my intention. Also, to those who are in this situation, and responded anyway, I thank you for that.

You choose Sam,the rest and ANTDrakko - I'm only going to target one of the things you both said, though I found the rest of it to be helpful, like everything else thus far. "Who am I making my videos for?" Well, everyone...and no one. I see it as a way of making new friends, not gaining popularity. Who doesn't like making a new friend? Besides, this topic has been covered hundreds of times, and I'd rather not go over it again.

Oh, Sam. I do have one more thing to address. Why should I have PMed silver and Sierra? Is there something wrong with praising them publicly? It's not like I was saying anything bad about either one of them. Quite the opposite - which I already said above, anyway. I'm not being sarcastic; I'm just a little confused to what you were getting at.

jbone - that was completely useless...but amusing.

Flint the Dwarf - fuck you. Seriously. How low do you have to stoop to bash someone's username? For your information, my sister called me DJ Ultima one day as a joke, and when I joined my first site, that name was already taken. So, I tacked on the first thing that came to mind: "the_great." I was thinking along the lines of a magician's name, not false self-confidence. Put some thought into your next pathetic insult, would you?

So, thanks for the replies, everyone. I think I've gotten all I can out of this thread, so don't expect much more from me on this topic.

You choose Sam,the rest wrote:.I'd much rather prefer the person watching the video to make their own damn mind on what the video, just takes the fun out of it if the editor just say "THIS IS THE POINT OF MY AMV". The final problem would be editors explaining the "making of" which pretty much what makes most video comments appear to long. If I was interesting in the history, how you did a certain effect or if I can give you a hang job then I'll email you. Otherwise, it's just a waste of space.

But seriously, that is the point of having a video information page for people's videos. It's not (generally) meant to be a place to inflate one's ego and tell your life story... it's to document just what it took to get this video up here, and at least in most cases I find that this is the case, that people write explanations so that there would be no need to email/PM them for it... quite frankly, personally I'm quite flooded with emails as it is from various parts of my professional/internet life, and adding another thing to my list is just bordering annoying... also, people are lazy which means they will more than likely will not go and email the creator about their videos at all and hence, perhaps if the video info never existed, the perpetuation of good editing skills will not work as efficiently as much as it *might* be happening now.

Me, when I look at the Announcements forum, besides what people have already mentioned, if I got to the point where I actually opened up the thread, whether or not there was some kind of info on their post, I actually generally go straight to the user profile as well and do read what's written there... I agree somewhat with the "if they didn't bother, why should I" principle, in that if I see in their profile and video info that they are here to mean business by taking the time to make interesting information and even a catchy profile pic, then they must really be here to get attention and hope that their obsession leads to great works. The more videos I see in your profile, the more I might be interested to stay because at least I can see that you are not giving up, even if the number or score of ops isn't up to scratch... I'm very much for the small guys, but at least put the effort ;)

And to that effect, though I frequent the Announcements forum, I'm not much of a poster there... so to that effect, I suggest looking at the "Views" field more to indicate whether people paid any attention to your video at all. Just like I'm too lazy to write emails or PM for info on vids if that was how we were suppose to get information, I'm also equally lazy when it comes to posts that only take a few lines to answer which I might be repeating too much (eg. Nice video, crap video, I like your gun, etc.)

The best way to get replies, opinions, popularity, ect is to make entertaining videos that people enjoy and/or respect. A couple people have achieved this level of status without making good videos, but they are the exception, not the rule.

Theres really nothing more to it. If people aren't replying, you need to make better videos. End of story.

Alright, this topic is starting to get out of hand, so I'm locking it and providing this summary post.

The keys to becoming more well-known and paid-attention-to is a) quality and b) consistency.

As Beowulf said, if you are able to consistently create entertaining videos, people will eventually notice and you will gain a following as people will start to associate your name/studio with entertaining videos.

If you feel you are not gaining recognition fast enough, pimp yourself out. Do lots of opinion exchanges, frequent amv chatrooms and forums and spread the word there, distribute your videos as much as possible, etc. Basically just do things to try and gain a wider audience. You may earn a certain amount of enmity if you come on too strong, but if you actually do put out entertaining videos, the negative feelings will probably not last too long.
