Are you paranoid with backups?

Postby Jnzk » Sat Jul 30, 2005 2:14 am

Lately I've been hearing so many horror stories about creators losing their work due to hard drive failures that I've started to back up my project to DVD-RW in the end of each editing day. Are you as worried about losing your data?

I haven't gone that far yet, but I do make an exhaustive backup at the end of a project. Sometimes if I get worried, I'll copy an export of a partially completed video over the network to another machine as a temporary backup.

My Comp crashes on a regular basis, so everything important is on my slave drive. That way I just unplug the slave an reformat.

Not really, I've only had one bad hard drive since I've had a computer.. but my friend had at least 3 die on him withen the last two years or so. Not sure why, maybe he messes around on them too much.. but because of that I am thinking of investing in a flash drive for backup reasons. I've usually had two HD's which I store some of the same material on most of the time so I guess thats another reason for me being somewhat unconcerned.

So I guess you could say I'm not vigorously trying to backup my data, more on the lax side. I'm more worried about my program not crashing on me and losing an hours worth of editing then a HD failure.

well i presonally have had a project that i worked on for roughly a year get lost when i had a hard drive crash, so now i am excessive on backing up...

i have 4 harddrives on my pc, and i keep a copy of all project files on each harddrive, so unless all 4 harddrives go i have a copy!

I've installed a RAID1 array for my projects and my downloaded AMVs. Consumer SATA RAID5 is becoming more and more feasible so I see myself going to that in the next 1-2 years.

I've managed to recover data from a formated hard disk that would refuse to even boot as secondary before the format. So no, i'm generaly not worried about loosing important data such as project files. Things such as amv's I keep dvd back-ups for. Just wish dvd 9's would start being a bit more afordable.

Iether someone beyond the clouds has a thing for you or you havent messed with your pc enough to do something that has an 0.006% of screwing up your whole system.

And then there were three?

Well, I've had a video project become corrupt, and I had to start over, but I never lost it completely. I just had to go back and watch it, then duplicate it.

But my hard drive has never wholly crashed, and you think it would've, with some of the nasty stuff my brother has done to it.

To answer the question, though, I don't really bother to back up my projects. I guess...I haven't made anything that would be difficult to make again (ie: custom effects). WMM isn't exactly known for its complexity, you know.

Since when is complexity soely based on effects?

It isn't, it isn't. That's not what I meant. It was just an example. To be honest, my best video was made with barely anything more than white and black fades.

So, sorry if that sounded...linear...or something. That wasn't my intention.

I usually back up my projects to my external HD every couple days or so, just in case. Also, I burn the finished vid to DVD. Never hurts to be safe, anyhow.
