Um. Noone makes you read the descriptions and lyrics, you know. :roll"

In fact, I write my descriptions as purely optional and only give a short gist in the opening sections and then detailed info below FOR THOSE WHO WANT. That's just a way for me to avoid any future unneccesary general questions on creative and technical aspects - by having them answered in full for inquiring minds. And if any more detail than that is required - well, that's a sign of a very attentive viewer and I'm all too glad to respond to that.

Anyway.

My own marking system or why my average is so high?

I use a "innocent until proven guilty" system, that is all videos for me are perfect 10's UNTIL I find something wrong with them in that or other section. I go from there and deduct accordingly.

Sue me for it if you want :P

It's worth underlining, anyway, because I think your point there is rather unreasonable to say the least.

Oh yeah, I can't stand it when people post the lyrics and nothing else. If I can't hear the lyrics and feel the need to look them up, I'll Google for it, thanks. And it's not as though I'd be reading the lyrics and watching the AMV at the same time. I wouldn't mind if an editor wrote down one or two unclear lines in the song though, especially if the lyrics are otherwise understandable.

And I'd rather ignore an essay than click on a link to an unfamiliar song and anime and find that the editor hasn't even summarised it.

Right, what was the topic again? Oh yeah, review scores. :)
Five is tolerable, six is okay, seven is good, nine is very good to almost perfect, and ten is perfect. Eight just falls between categories for me. I usually check out opinions before downloading, if the editor hasn't bothered writing anything useful on the info page. Only if the opinions are unavailable or non-existent do I start checking out the scores, and even then I'll probably ignore them as I was interested enough in the video to read its information page.

YOUR the reason the average here is 8 now!! I start at 7 as that is all I expect not a 10. Then again, it takes all types.

There's carrot and stick. I choose carrot and then insert pointed sticks where appropriate. No need to be a harsh critic as long as the feedback serves a practical function. I think striving for an equalized mark average is pretty pointless. Well, marks are on the whole pretty pointless, which is why I nearly always do mark breakdowns in my ops to explain why I gave certain marks. It's the feedback that counts.

In my view, the op system as feedback works very well on a one-on-one basis as a means of exchanging views between the artist and the audience. It pretty much fails as marks go on the level of the AMV community in general. And it's impossible for it not to, but I guess the competitive orientation of the community members and society at large makes it hard to dispense with it.

I also especially look at the description the creator puts out when downloading. if it's not at least a small paragraph, unless it's on the to 10% list, I rarely look at it. a creator has to have some pride in his work for me to be able to appreaciate it.

 I'm the other way around... I hate ppl that just can't shut up about their work! I mean what good is background info, tools used and stuff gonna do me! More often then not, none, whatsoever except a waste of my time and a few extra strokes to get to the download button at the bottom -_-. I'm not saying if you got a short, funny little story or won awards don't put it, just I shouldn't feel like I HAVE to do that since there's no point to it. I guess it just takes all types  .

well, I do admit, it chafes me a little when I have to scroll through a few pages of technical remarks, but what I meant was that if a person can't be bothered to say something about time spent working on it, or what the general gist os, then why should I? if all I see is a line that, "here's my newest AMV, enjoy." I am NOT going to download it without good reason.
Look at me! Look at me! I posted in WOT so I must be evil!!! [/sarcasm]

Look at my new video!

When I write opinions, I don't hesitate to give out 4's, 5's, 6's, or 7's. I don't think I've ever given anything lower than a 4, just because videos that I don't think are going to entertain me, I pass up on anyways, and even if it's just watching the animation flow by, I like something about it. (Wow, that was a run-on sentence, eek.) When I receive scores like that, I take them seriously and hope that they explained why they gave me these in the "bad" section.

Then again, I don't tend to look at scores when I download a video, because everyone's tastes differ, and some of the reviewers on this site have a very different understanding than I do of what makes an enjoyable video. Just like those ultra testosterone pumping guys who give straight 1's to shounen-ai/yaoi videos and are like "OMG SO GEY GROSS". I can't allow those people to impare my judgement of a video by lowering the video's scores.

To me, that sounds like a really good way of marking a AMV. I wish more people marked like that. That is how I kinda mark AMV's when I actually give opinions. Most of the time I just leave star ratings.

Frankly though, I understand where the dial-up people are coming from where they have a long time to wait and thus have to be pretty picky in what they download. However, personally I am kinda disappointed at those that only look at OPs and and only download those that have a high rating. What about those that don't get opinions? Or what about those that, while have opinions, someone marked it low that you personally might like more? Just because the numbers say a AMV is bad or good, doesn't mean that it is true. This is mostly true for those with few opinions (10 or lower in my experience). Now if a video has 40 opinions and all of them are low, well that's a bit different. Then again, that's just my opinion and I stick by it.
