A64 vs A64x2

Can a motherboard that can run a Athlon 64 (or FX) processor also support a Athlon 64x2 processor?

If it's Socket 754, then no.

If it's Socket 939, then you should be able to run an X2 with only a BIOS upgrade (if that).

Goddamn if someone bought Socket 754, they should kick them selves now.

Well, if they bought it before 939 then I think they'll be happy.

Or they may have bought one because they're cheaper: in which case they're probably not going to be able to afford an X2 processor anyway.

Third option:

Until very recently, socket 939 boards weren't available in small-form-factor systems.

Not really, I have a S754 Athlon64 3400+ Clawhammer, it's a regular PCI board by DFI, overclocks pretty nice.

When I want to upgrade I'll be going PCIexpress etc, no point bottlenecking it anymore with old components. A PCIexpress RAID card is going to kick a serious amount of ass :D
