Reinstalling XP. Change avoidable?

Postby Akashio » Fri Jun 17, 2005 2:29 pm

I want to reinstall XP, but my one dread is that my registry will be cleared and I'll have to reinstall all my programs of which I do not have installs CDs any more. Is there any way around this?

You could try inserting the CD and tell it to just repair the system. But I doubt it is possible to avoid this.

If you know or can find the registry key for the program you could export that entry and just re-import it once you have re-installed. A word of warning, some registry entries are linked to others so exporting 1 entry might not do the trick, depends on what software it is really.

I wouldn't recommend repairing, I've done that before and it's caused more hassle than anything else. Always format and install where possible

You could created a personalised xp installation disk, which will install any programs/drivers you choose during the windows install. I've got a guide (in the form of magazine scans) which I can send you if you want, but its prety technical, so it may be easier to just install windows then everything els seperately.
