AMVs Vs. Anime

I've even used anime for amvs that I haven't even watched a single episode of... So yea, AMVs all the way.

Actually..that's pretty much how my anime dvd's get bought..My first thought is "Will this give me some good footage for an AMV later?"

My love for amvs though has only grown, and pretty much completely replaced the need that I had for anime. I've even used anime for amvs that I haven't even watched a single episode of... So yea, AMVs all the way.

How do you get inspired to make an AMV then? Is it mechanical for you?

I usually watch a given anime and if I truly liked it, I form a concept for the project.

Sometimes after having seen enough AMVs of a certain series, you can tell if a song would fit to what you've already seen of the anime. For instance, I have an idea for a RahXephon video and I've not seen one bit of the series except for what's in the videos I've downloaded.


I was never really a hardcore anime fan in the first place, and when I got introduced to AMVs I went a little crazy, but the amount of anime I watched during that time period was grew pretty fast also.

Lately, though, I've been watching way more AMVs. The reason being that I've not had a job for over a year and I have no money to buy new anime, so the series I really want to see are really hard to get a hold of. This might change, though. Galaxy Angel is a lot of fun to watch, and I should be getting RahXephon fairly soon, so I'll see how that pans out.

I still watch AMVs. There's a few anime series, though, like Kaleido Star, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Haibane Renmei, Yakitate!! Japan, and Air that I'm actively trying to obtain and will watch as soon as possible. I don't really do anything analogous with AMVs...

To me anime will come first. I buy my dvds to watch the shows and to try new ones out if I haven't seen them before. It is only an incentive that I could use those dvds for future amv projects I work on. Collecting and watching anime is my hobby. Making amvs is a side bonus of that hobby.

I typically become inspired by the song. As I listen to the song over and over, I begin to see a vision in my head of what I want to create. Then I simply try to find an appropriate anime to fit with what I want to do.

Unless of course, I am making a dramatic amv, which I will occasionally do. With those, the idea usually starts from the anime. And after all, at this point, I've seen hundreds of different anime, so really I'm pretty much covered for just about any song i'd like to do. Or I can sometimes find out what an anime is about by reading a description or having someone tell me about it

...yeah. AMV's outweigh anime for me.

I actually didn't even get interested in anime until I saw an AMV. And I've noticed that when I watch (or buy) animes, I have AMV's in mind. Occasionally, I'll stumble upon something I REALLY like (Elfen Lied!) but for the most part, I view anime as materials for AMV's and little more. I never even realized that until now......

hmm... I'd say that I probably still enjoy a good anime better, but lately I find myself watching more AMVs than anime, for the simple fact that 3 min video is alot easier to find time to watch than 30 mins per episode ;p

As someone once observed somewhere around here, AMVs have become their own semi-independant fandom. Kind of strange, but there it is.

That said, I still watch a lot more anime than AMVs. Time-wise, anyway. I think.

It is the respected/cool thing to say you scorn anime and it exists only to fuel your AMV genius - so of course I'm exactly the opposite.

I went through a phase where I expected to edit everything I bought, and if I liked a series and had no ideas for it I considered it "a waste." This made me feel guilty for buying a series I like, which is stupid. Seriously, logic? No. I'm still on an I-pay-the-rent-and-my-job-sucks budget, so it's nice if I do come up with an extra use for the things I've bought just because that's a way to get more "use" out of my spending, but it's no longer a big deal to me.

As fun as AMVs may be, they're each only a few minutes long. They're flashy and cool and may move me for as long as they're on screen, but I wouldn't get sucked in the way I do for a series.

Fan first, editor second, though I enjoy both. That may make my work suck to many people, but I like it this way. I think it's a little silly to bite the hand that feeds you, at least until the point where you're rendering all your own footage yourself. Then you can play the I'm-too-cool-for-this game and not look like a tool.

I do not ever scrap ideas. I only delay them. I am about three days from finishing my current video. Original idea? Three years ago. I already know which video I'll be making after this too.

I have a lot of gestational type of stuff, listening to a song, seeing an anime, but that is not the same as a true idea. A true idea means I have to allow myself to storyboard. Most of the time, I don't allow myself to, because I don't have the time.

Any idea that makes it to the storyboard phase will be made, even if it takes years.

It's a balance for me, as I watch AMVs while I watch anime (TV almost always has a DVD in it, and I usually keep my AMVs folder open in case I suddenly feel like watching one).

My anime collection is kinda halted at current, as I haven't had much new income in the past 10 months (I need to get a job for the summer -.-;;; ). I still have about four series that I'm collecting, too : / Not to mention all the ones I want to see but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I usually "want to watch anime" especially for do Amvs, during school time or when I usually have any work to do, use the little free time I have watching animes can be a pain, something that would make me answer me Amv > Anime, anyway when I have vacations like during summer I can watch series of anime only because I love anime =) Usually so there is a balance, even if I actually watch animes especially for make amvs of them
