No, I transferred the files over my LAN, which was simple and easy.
But if you're using an external hard drive, if the drive is formatted FAT32 rather than NTFS or HFS, both Windows and Mac OS X can read it. Unfortunately, FAT32 has a filesize limit of 4 GB and Windows 2K/XP won't format a partition larger than 32 GB as FAT32 with the built-in disk formatter. Some third-party disk management tools will, though.
If you're stuck using an external hard disk bigger than 32 GB, as I have in the past, my recommendation is to split it into two partitions, one 32 GB in size, formatted FAT32, the other taking the rest of the disk, formatted for whichever system you're more likely to be using, NTFS for Windows, HFS for Mac. Use the FAT32 partition to transfer files between the two and the other partition for storing whatever you need.
As another note, Windows-formatted iPods use FAT32 as their file system, allowing you to use them just like an external hard drive on both OSX and Windows. I've used mine frequently to transfer files from my PC to the Macs at work.
