Questions about Anime Central

How was A-Cen the past few years? Is it a big con like Otakon? I'm guessing it's a bit smaller. Overall, is it worth travelling to? For instance, last year's road trip to MD was fun. I had a blast at Otakon. Five hundred well spent. AWA is closer to me (duh) and it's an okay convention. I mainly just chat around and watch whatever they're showing.

The reason is this: I mainly want to go to Chicago to reunite with a friend I haven't seen in two years and the con next year is a good excuse. So I just want to hear what anyone has to say about A-Cen 'cause it's just an extra in my trip. I'd much rather just see the sights and hang out and maybe just stay one whole day at the con. Since registration is half off for the next four days or so I was just going to pay twenty-five for three days and just go, hoping that nothing plan-changing was going to happen between now and then. Anyone?

As far as AMV and the ACen contest are concerned, I don't mean to insult poor MachaaQ or any of the other people running it, and I haven't been there myself, but from the con aftermath on the AMV Mailing List and here on the board, the following is my recommendation:

Don't go. Both years which I've followed it it's been poorly handled. That's not to say it won't be better this year, but personally, I would not choose to go there. Two years in a row of what people complained has been poor planning and bad execution do not give me confidence. AX I will go to next year despite the shit that happened this year. If they F@#$ up next year I will skip the year and see where the chips fall. I'm currently in that mode with Acen. I will not even CONSIDER attending it - nor entering it - until they have a good year.

Please note these are my opinions based upon all the stuff I've read and heard from other people about Acen. I have not personally attended it and I entered it in 2000 but not 2001, so take my advice with however much grainage of salt you feel necessary.

From what I remember, they had people bring their videos to acen during the con and were judging till early hours in the morning. I think Quu was up all night/morning rendering videos and lost alot of sleep.

ACen is one of the best cons I've ever attended.

I didn't pay much attention to the AMV contest (I didn't even go to it this year... too much to do to sit in a room watching videos), but the rest of the con rocked.

Well.. I only went there last year.. yes it was my first con ever... Anyways, I had a blast even if the AMV contest wasn't exactly what I had hoped for, but there were plenty of fun things to do the whole time so I recommend that you go even if it is just an excuse to go to chicago. 8)

LOL, isn't it kind of hard to enter an AMV contest before you made any amvs? (typo?)

My first con will be AWA... but my first AMV submission was at Megacon in '01.
I have sinned. I made a video I wanted to make that was music + anime + sync + action + effects/transitions. Oh lordy.
