Privacy increase for member email addresses
I've modified the main site profile so that any members who have set "Always show my e-mail address" in their forum profile to "No" will not have their email displayed on their member profile.
The email address will still be accessible to admins, of course.
Once I get round to it I'll add the same email hiding option on the main profile edit page too.

I wonder how well that actually stops email harvesters (how hard can it really be to have your harvester work around this) vs. how well it just screws over the blind, people with images off, etc.bum wrote:I remember someone making a sujestion a while ago to replace all @ in email addresses with an image of an @ to stop email harvesting programs from collecting all emails on the site.

How much of a problem is spam harvesters really? AFAIK the threat of email harvesting is greatly overexagerated on specialized forums like the org. I have a hotmail address listed so I'm getting loads of spam regardless of if it's public or not but can someone who has a non-free email service address verify if they've ever gotten spammed because their address was avalable on the org?

My trythil@crescentisland.com address gets a whole heck of a lot of spam; it never really got spammed before I used it here.godix wrote:How much of a problem is spam harvesters really? I don't really care, though. Every piece of spam that flows in is more training data for bogofilter, which in turn helps my spam filtering on other accounts. I say bring it on: there's no real way for spammers to win against modern spam-filtering software.

Sure there is, (viagra) because any (Nigeria) technology has a (penis increasing) loophole.
Honestly, I can't attribute any extra spam to my old e-mail address, and so far I haven't got any on my new one.
