Site Performance To Increase
Hey All,
Have you noticed that the storage servers, Nago and Kero, are getting kinda slow during the day? You’re not the only one.
It seems that our 100Mbps connection to the internet is being maxed out 12-14 hours out of the day. Max-out usually starts around noon local (Eastern) time and doesn’t let up until around 2am (thanks, all you west coast late night downloaders). Our minimum output during the day is around the 25Mbps mark. With all this downloading, we’ve transferred more than 20TB for February and March each month. If we had more bandwidth, we could do better than that!
Over the last two weeks or so, I have been contacting various ISPs to see what kind of a good deal we can get on more bandwidth. After vigorous negotiations, we’ve been offered a great deal! Here’s what we got:
* Cool new server admin tools like KVM over IP and remote power reboots
* Co-location facility about 10 mins from Derobert’s house so that if something goes horribly wrong, we can be physically looking at the machines in a short amount of time
* 175Mbps connection to use to our hearts content
* 20% reduction in our monthly bill
Yes, you read that right: we get a 75% increase in performance for a 20% REDUCTION in cost!! I love how computer-related costs go down all the time.
The only down side is that we will have to move all servers from their currently physical location to a new one. This means that we will have some (hopefully small) down time.
To test our new stuff, we will move Kero over sometime in the middle of April. If all goes well, Kero uploads/downloads should only be down for a few hours. Once that is done, Nago and Yuri (the web server) will move at the end of the month, again with hopefully only a few hours of down time.
By May 1, we should all be able to [Emperor voice] witness the fire-power of this fully armed and operation battle station! [/voice] More news as things develop.
I hope this helps. Thanks again and have fun!!

Re: Site Performance To Increase
If this is for real, it might be worth noting that the middle of April has several contests in succession: two on the 8th, two on the 15th. Also, MTAC this Friday and AniBo on the 29th.Phade wrote:...

Hey All,
This one is for real. We are actually getting a nice upgrade in bandwidth and it will take until the beginning of May to implement. The main reason for that is that we needed to give our current ISP a 30-day notice if we were going to switch providers. We will be moving Kero sometime after mid-April just to make sure our equipment will work nicely with the new provider. Again, more details as they arrive.
