Katsucon 2005 AMV Entrant List

This forum is for the announcement and discussion of anime music video contests.

Hey, whoever sees the finalist list first and decides to post it to a-m-v.org, start a new thread. That way we won't have to scroll through and members won't initially confuse it with the entry list.

Good luck to you all. I'll be staffing at Katsucon registration. I'll see you there.

Girl, I haven't even seen your finished video yet, too! If you're gonna be around this weekend, I'll send you the final MPEG.

This morning there was an announcement by CXI on the Katsucon forum about the Final Cut List:

The list of music video finalists has been available in the Announcements section since the beginning of January, but apparently not everyone realizes that. Here is the information duplicated from those posts. Sorry for the confusion:

And then he proceeds to list all the participants that submitted to the contest.

Whatever happened to what Keith Mayfield said back in mid-December?

Please get your entries in. Pre Judging will take place January 15th 2005
On January 19th the final entry list will posted.

So apparently all the entries have been pre-judged, and no video was rejected due to content, score, or time constraints. Also, apparently there is no time limit for the AMV contest showings this year; in the past 2 years there was a 2-hour limit for the contest.

If that indeed was the case, it's all fine and dandy, but honestly, if in the past 2 years there was a Final Cut List, and there was an announcement saying something to that effect this year also, there should be something indicating that it is a Final Cut List. Can we have a little consistency here?

So this means everyone made the contest by default. Okay. I wish this was more clear to everyone. Brakus, apparently you and I are not the ones confused by all of this.

I guess that makes me happy that my videos will be shown, but at the same time it makes me sad that there weren't a whole lot of videos submitted which would nesesitate a preliminary cut. This could be either very good or very bad as it could be a great contest or a overall crappy one with only few decent videos. Considering the entrant list I don't think its the later case. I just hope I don't feel like clawing my eyes out while at the contest ^_^

Someone e-mailed me about Keith Mayfield, the guy running the Katsucon AMV contest this year. The e-mailer told me Keith ran the contest for Katsucon 8, 3 years ago. There were no title cards, no apparent order to the contest (by genre, alphabetical order, or whatever), and insulted everybody who submitted by having a typo on almost every entry on the ballot. The contest that year ran for over 3 hours because everyone who submitted became a finalist by default.

As mckeed said, given the non-communication we've gotten from Keith, and no indication of a final cut list, this contest with either be really good or really crappy. Unfortunately the latter scenario is starting to materialize.

What Brakus said really upsets me, and really sounds strange.

Why have a pre-judging period if you're not going to...you know...prejudge? I also like it better when the AMVs are shown by category.

I don't mind if we have to wait to hear what's going on, but a little communication with the people running this would be nice. Just to say "Yes, this is definitely the list" or "No, you'll find out at the con."

Okay and you guys were complaining about Otakon last year. Complain, complain, complain. That's all you guys do around here about amv contest and they aren't going the way you think they should. I'm not trying to start an argument. I've already ran contest and know what it is like. Heck I still owe opinions from the contest but situations have come up where it haven't gave me time to do them. What I'm trying to say is maybe something came up or something is giving them trouble right now and we should be patient. I'm sorry but for me as long as they get the contest running and everything looks good, that is what comes down to the final product of the contest.

The probem is that is doesn't look good. It didn't look good last year. There were some interlacing issues that were made MUCH worse by crappy re-encoding for the DVD. That was when there even appeared to have put effort it. What can we expect when there isn't a followthrough of what they said they were going to do. Katsucon has never been a very good con AMV wise. Simple things like bumpers are easy to make. Hell, I was at a con where I was in a room where we made the bumpers for the final results of the contest about an hour or so before the contest. It doesn't take that much effort. Their is a certain responsibility in running a contest. Doing it half-assed won't help people in wanting to submit to the contest for next year.

Agreed with mckeed, x2.

When you sign on to run an AMV contest, you assume a large amount of responsibility. You don't agree to run a contest, and then decide, "oh, I've got more important things to do, so I'm gonna axe the title cards and improperly label ballots because I don't have the time." That's bull.

As creators, we hope that when we submit a video, the work will be treated with respect. One presumes that the person running the contest will know how to handle submissions, the amount of sumbissions, and the overall presentation of videos to be shown at the con itself. Once that assumption is proven false, yeah, of course people are going to bitch and moan about it when the person in charge of the contest doesn't know how to run an organized event.

Heh, are you referring to us at AnimeNEXT last year? :) THAT'S dedication when we can make title cards for the winners to be shown during the cosplay intermission AT the con itself! :P

Was Keith Mayfield the one who ran the amv contest when Katsucon was in Baltimore a few years ago?

AWESOME! With a little luck, my amv will be the "Linking in the Park" vid this time.

Ha! That was the only Katsucon I've ever been to, and I kept the AMV ballot from the contest just for THAT reason... to this day, I still refer to LP as "Linking in the Park." :D

I'm just saying not to prejudge the contest eventhough of how grim it may look in your opinion right now. When the final thing is said and done you can then comment on it. I'm not a person that'll prejudge. Anyway if this is the finalist list good luck to everyone.
