Advice wanted for mail-in submissions

Postby jasper-isis » Sun Nov 14, 2004 11:55 am

Assuming one CD-R as the media of choice...

- What size envelope?
- Bubble-lined or regular?
- Paper sleeve or plastic case for the CD?
- Which USPS domestic mail service to use? (priority? first-class?)
- How much postage? Or how much do your choices weigh altogether?
- Any other advice that you would like to share.

Thanks!

-Um... big enough to fit a CD, but not too much bigger.
-Bubble-lined
-Plastic case
-Priority (unless your submission's last-minute) w/ tracking (so you can be paranoid from the privacy of your computer)
-$3.85 for priority and another 40 cents for tracking
-No real advice. How hard can it be?

So priority is $3.85 no matter what the weight?
Now I'm tempted to just drive the ~30 minutes to the contest mailbox. :|

I heard that if you don't mail the package from a post office, you have to write "priority" or something beneath the postage stamp area. Not sure if that's true though. It's little things like that that throw me off.

Guess I'll be going to the post office soon. Thanks for the pointers. :)

There are CD mailer things designed specifically to mail CDs. I know you can get them at Staples or similar.

I use cardboard CD mailers. There's no padding. I use a paper sleeve and I mail the disc regular first class postage. $0.83 postage. USPS is pretty reliable IMO. I haven't had a disc yet lost in the mail and none have been damaged. You're really wasting your money sending a CD by Priority Mail.

Staples has bubblepack envelopes just for CDs in a 12-pack - "CD size Jiffylite cushioned mailers" - 7.25" square. These will work with slimline jewel boxes where the cardboard mailers usually don't - and especially when you need to put a paper entry form in with the CD.

Personally, I use paper sleeves and the bubblepack mailers, but I add pieces of corrugated cardboard on each side of the disc before putting it in the package. Regular first-class postage (not Priority), but if time is short, either 2 or 3 day shipping with FedEx or UPS. I don't trust USPS when the time is down to a couple of days.
