Couldn't you download a free FTP server program (I know they exist, I've seen them out there) and run it on your own computer? Or would the university's firewall prevent anyone from accessing it (I know I would have that problem here at The College)?

Yeah, anything I run from this box gets stopped at the campus firewall, and I don't want to set one up illegally by changing a setting here or there.

The site takes awhile to be updated, but when it does, it should have a snail-mail address for you to mail dvds/cds to. I don't want to give it out on a public forum. If you want it now, just e-mail me and ask for the address.

Also, please contact me first with info about your AMV, just so I have an idea of how many people are submitting.

Because its the first year, and not many people know about it, we have no idea how many submissions there will be. I want to see if I can get some companys to sponser prizes, but unless I have a number to give them, I don't want to talk to them yet.

Thank you for your question and your idea.

g-mail and HSinternet, I realize not everone has this, which is why we have a snail mail address now. The con IS 2 months away, and mailing a disc takes what? 2-3 days?

far from professional.

Sorry. We're volunteers here, not a company.

Sure thing, the site will soon be updated with a snail mail address you can send it to.

What part of this do people not understand?

It seems to me that if so many people are misunderstanding, then obviously there is a communication failure going on.

When the snail mail address actually goes up, then I'll be happy to look at it. But right now, there's nothing on the website except a note about email. Of course people are confused. Yes, now we know, but you've got to understand that this thread could be seen as confusing and frustrating.

As for you being volunteers and not a company. . . well, yes, of course you're not a company. But as a representative of a convention, you should at least be professional. You're in a position of authority. I'm in college, and I volunteer for things too, and I take anything I volunteer for very seriously and try to act as professional as I can for the sake of whatever I'm representing. I try my best not to be seen as "apathetic".

few, I can post now!

I Appologize for any communication error on the site.
I am not the webmaster, so my policies take awhile to get put on the web, please be patient.

If I seem apathetic, thats just how I am, I just don't care (kind of like in The Stranger). If you want to be my friend, fine, if not, fine.
I'll take your suggestions, and I'll try to impliment as many as possible (barring contradictions). I have free time now(midterms are over), so e-mail me if you want to submit.

UPDATE: the snail mail address is now on the site! go check it out here:
http://www.anime-la.org/anime-la/amv/
ADDITIONAL UPDATE: you can contact me with questions at: amv@anime-la.org I can probably answer them.

Thank you

A long strange trip and getting stranger

Postby Hazel Chaz » Sat Nov 13, 2004 1:04 am

I appreciate all of the vigorous and emphatic discussion that's been running here about our little startup convention. It's been a rocky road since I first decided it might be interesting to run a small anime convention that's a little different from the big ones. The hotel issues, which are why we pushed it back a year, have been resolved and are behind us (yes! hooray!), and now we're starting to see some of other issues come up, which is in part shown by what you guys are talking about here. But I'm delighted to see so many people taking an interest in the success of Anime Los Angeles.

I think that Anime Los Angeles will be a success, in the sense of it'll be fun to attend and fun to work on too. (I hope it breaks even, becase otherwise there will never be a Year Two.) I've recruited a number of steady, seasoned con-running volunteers to run some of the areas of the convention; in other places, I'm putting my faith in some new people who I've never met, and intend to let them show us what they've got.

Mikal wrote to me and said, "how about an AMV contest?" I said, "sure." If you see contradictory information coming from him or on the website, then tell him -- he'll listen to constructive criticism. Don't flame him, please; he's going to college, and I'm pretty sure he's deep in that whole midterms-to-finals stretch when things get a bit crazy. I'm new to AMVs, so if I've goofed up on something "obvious" when I've updated the web page, please let Mikal or me know and I'll deal with it.

So, should we insist on Mpeg2? Should we allow DivX? Should we tell people that high-compression schemes result in lousy playback? Should we just get the largest post office box they offer, and let people burn their discs and send them in? Should we take copious notes about ideas we can try next year, and get through this year behaving like sensible, civilized human beings?

There's been plenty of constructive criticism mixed with the flames, but Mikail has chosen to ignore both, to his own detriment.

As far as your own line of questioning goes: yes (to MPEG2), no (to DivX), yes (to the high-compression warning, but anyone who makes AMVs should know this already), maybe (you're a first-year con and you've posted with very little advance warning, I wouldn't hold your breath about getting a mailbox filled with entries), and yes. You may also want to consider contacting other contest coordinators and asking them for advice, and ask editors who have participated in many past contests what they liked/didn't like.

I have 1 question for you dodocool...
do you, or did you ever have any intention of attending?

I never though we would have a "mailbox full", thats why I choose to allow everything, if you ask and it makes sense why.

We have contacted previous coordinators. I'm following their advice right now.

*points to location* Attending is a moot point, but that might not have prevented me from submitting had I wanted to. This thread will probably discourage plenty more people from submitting as well. C'est la vie.

Would Anime LA be interested in showing multieditor projects as well? :D

multieditor is?
Many people edited it? of course, that falls under "group"

what exactly do you mean?

Dynamicman out...

Many people edited a large video/large amounts of videos for a single project. This and this are good examples of what I would like to send to your con.

Multieditor projects are usually non competing and are just for general showing.

Wheher or not someone's attending, he or she may wish to send something in.

Your second sentence make no sense whatsoever.
