AWA 11 (yes already planning) questions 4 a first CON visit

Postby keyboardsamurai » Sat Oct 30, 2004 8:19 pm

Got a few q's for a first time goin 2 anime convention.

1. Is all the hype real?
2. How soon should u book ur hotel reservation? (if u want it in the con's hotel)?
3. Are costumes to much hassel or are they the main thing? (going to go as Orichimaru from Tenchu)

4. How much mula ($) should I bring to the con?

Gonna have a ton to spare cause i'm gonna be back from a 7 month intern at Walt Disney so will have a lot of spending money available ;)

5. Is it wise to bring a laptop and a ton of anime?

6. Booking with people on the board to save money at a hotel?

btw n case it makes difference i'll be 22 in Jan.... so the age thing not a prob.

Sigh, since AWA 9 I'm considering to attend...
It would cost me around 1000 euro I think which is too much for a job-educant. I'm planning ahead for AWA 12, then it would work maybe, AWA 11 would be too much considering what I'm planning for next year.

So next year I'll go visit more (awesome) european cons :)

This will be my first time going to a grand anime convention. I've been to one before, but it's not even worth mentioning (local crap anime where they couldn't even play my svcd encoded video).

The disney thing is an internship i'm going to that will be ending like 1 month before the con starts, so as soon as i'm done with that i'll be at the convention.

How does sharring rooms work? Meaning who pays for it upfront first?

Oops, forgot to bold that since it was keyboardsamurai's quote.

I'm still going next year. Tickets from LA are always cheap thanks to United airlines that seats me with rambuctious children kicking my seat and 500 pound ladies

I may come to AWA next year I'm not sure yet. I can afford so far Katsucon, Otakon, and Anime USA. That's already 3 a year but a 4th would be nice.

That might be cutting it a bit close. Last year the hotel was full by mid-late spring, IIRC. Then again, I always book late and end up in the hotel across the street :P

However, since I'm so burned out on anime, I never really get anything in the dealer's room anymore. All I really got at AWA was a darker Naruto headband and a Peter Family Guy action figure which was probably a total of 40 bucks. Rest of the money was spent on food and hotel fees.

Then again not everyone is burned out on anime as I am and tries to grab everything in the dealers room so I guess bringing $400 would be a good start.

*Raises hand* I'll end up going as well. It won't be my first con, but it will be my first AWA. Hell. By the time it rolls around, I'll have my second Zero costume finished. Now if only I had a picture of Absolute Zero so I can show you how bad-ass I'll look... (Yes, I'm probably driving too). So if I end up driving, I may be able to shuttle people from the airport to the hotel.

I'd love to go to AWA next year. I had a great time this year. I'll be moving very very far away by then though, so I'll have to wait and see.

When ever I've gone to a convention, it's actually been on relatively short notice. So I've never been in a con hotel, and I have regretted it, especially at AWA X.

If this is going to morph into a 'are you going to AWA XI' thread, then I may as well say that I am indeed going this year also :) I enjoyed AWA X too much not to.
