Buying New Video Card

Postby anneke » Wed Sep 29, 2004 9:49 am

Suggestion on a new video card.

Windows XP system.
AGP Port

I need video Input and Output. (I'm a Yaoi AMV creator, and alot of Yaoi is still only found on VHS, so yes I need input.)

I also want a card that will work well with Video Gaming. Namily Star Wars Galaxies.

Suggestions?

I've always been a fan of ATI's All-In-Wonder family, though I know other people dislike them with a passion. I've been using an AIW 128 or 8500DV for four years now, and have loved them.

I can't speak to the gaming side, since I don't play them, but the VI-VO has been pretty good for both of the cards I've owned, with the 8500DV being much better than the 128.

The current model is the 9800 Pro ($369 list), though the 9600XT/9600 ($219/199) and 9000PRO ($149) are still available.

I'm looking into the ATI Radeon 9600. It seems to have Capture ability.

The XT didn't seem to have the input (from TV/VHS) ability.

Do you want a dual (capture and output) card or a just output card?

When you said video card, I was tempted to recomend ye old Connect3D's Radieon 9200se. $50, 128Mbs DDRAM, 8X AGP and a S-Video out. Inexpensive, highly effective.

Went with the AIW ATI 9600. Found a good deal for it at PCclub. It will do what I need it to do. Thanks for all the suggestions.

well to settle this, if you really want to play games, a cheap nvidia alternative is to get an Nvidia 5900xt made by MSI http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=14-127-119&depa=0 for about $181. The card does have vivo(video in, video out) for capturing/exporting ect. and it is ok for games with 8 pixel pipelines and a 256-bit memory interface, so it's pretty much twice as fast as the ATI 9600 series.

But if you really want to pay more money, you could get a 9800 pro AIW as others have said, or just wait so that you can get the x800XT AIW, so you can have a killer gaming card with better support and functionalities
