Do you Dub or Sub?

Postby The_Digital_Phoenix » Sat Sep 07, 2002 1:26 pm

Personally I prefer dubs. I like the voice acting.

Subs drive me nuts. I'm either reading a book or watching tv - not both! lol

The Japanese voices are nice though. But dubs still rule with me.

In almost all cases I watch subs.

First off, I was brought up on subs. I had the good fortune to have parents who took me to a lot of foriegn films as I was growing up.

Second, when I watch something from another country, I like to hear the language and appretiate the culture from which the title comes from, be it France, Germany, Russia or Japan.

Lastly, most dubs are terrible... it amazes me how much damage some dubs do to the anime... voices are wrong, inflections ruin meanings of sentences, some voice directors are oblivious to what the show is about (or forced to ignore obvious points in the show)

Now... I know that subtitle scripts will often suffer at the hands of people who don't know anything as well... believe me, I've heard enough stories about battles between people who know what they're doing and the morons who are calling the actual shots...

Fortunately, with bad subtitles, you can still hear the "voices" of the actual actors... and even with bad subtitles, you can get an idea of the scene just from the quality of the voices of the actors... even if you don't know what they're saying, you can get a lot out of inflections and emotions.

There are a few dubs that I think are OK... but even then I still watch the Japanese...

There are only 3 titles I watch dubbed... and only ONE where I actually prefer the English to the Japanese (and that should tell you something)

I'm one of those people who can read something even though they are not staring right at it. So I watch the video and my mind reads the subs. It's also great because it helps me to read fast!

If i concentrate on words as a whole, I can read everything on the screen or on a page in one blink. So I prefer subs way more because I like the Japanese voices and the emotion that it carries.

Dubs are strange though, especially if they are for an anime that I've already seen in Japanese, like Eva. The lip sync is off (even on "proffesional" subbing), I notice that right away, and then the voices just don't sound the same. Shinji Japanese sounds very different then Shinji English.

Although if it's an anime that I haven't already seen done in Japanese, then it's harder to pick up on lip sync, voice tone differences, and other stuff.

Anyway, I prefer subs when I have already seen an anime done to Japanese and dubs when I haven't...most of the time.

I almost always prefer the sub version because the acting is better ;P and I don't mind reading since I can read fast enough not to notice any difference. Plus, I took 2 years of Japanese, so I can even watch some simple shows without subtitles at all.

However, I do watch some dubbed anime when I think the dub track is good.

I don't understand people who say they will *only* watch the sub or dub (being an english speaking person) since they are just selling themselves short either way. They both have their pros and cons.

And you don't have to get anyone's written approval that a dub is good if you like it yourself. But, unless you are illiterate, refusing to -ever- watch subtitled anime is lazy in my opinion.

I think I need to clarify

I don't understand when people will only watch subbed anime or dubbed anime and never even try it the other way. Many series can only be watched subbed but some dubs are ok. How will people know they don't like something if they don't try it? Of course, once your ears start bleeding or if you can't keep up with the subs, that is understandable.

I have met people who are like that, they won't do anything but bash one or the other.

But you know what they say about protesting too much.

A freind told me just after posting this that it would start a war. That was never my intent. I was simply curious as to how many of us watch subs or dubs.

I like dubs better because I like the english voices. When done right they have a lot of power in them. Sure the lip synching is never right on but I look past that.

I have trouble with subs because I can't seem to keep up with them. I just don't read fast enough. I like the Japanese voices though. I have a lot of J-Pop and consider most of it to be better than the English music I have.

I'm sorry I brought this up and perhaps it would be best if we stop the thread here.

I agree completely with MistyCaldwell ((sorry if I spelled that wrong..))... dubs and subs are both good and I'll never understand people who watch only one or the other.. that kind of narrow-mindedness makes you miss out on a lot of good things...

I like to watch both the dub and sub so that I can see what both are like - but I'm an artist and I LOVE to just watch the animation, so often I'll watch the dub just because the subtitles are annoying and get in the way of the gorgeous artwork..
