Jpop AMV Contest hosted by OAS at Yasumicon, 2004

Postby norskotaku » Mon May 31, 2004 5:17 pm

In addition to the awesome amv contest Yasumicon already has, OAS will be hosting a secondary contest as part of the OrangeAnime Jpop room. This contest will be for amvs using any kind of Japanese audio, whether it's the latest Mini Moni song or your favorite track from the .hack//SIGN soundtracks. We will show the videos and winners in the OrangeAnime Jpop room on Sunday at the con.
Image
here are the basic rules:

Contest is open to anyone, national and international, so attendance at the con is not required.

AMV must use some form of Japanese music for audio. This includes J-pop, J-rock, as well as anime music (soundtracks, etc.) or music from anime-inspired games (such as Final Fantasy).

If the lyrical content is important to the video, you must submit a copy of the translation. If the lyrics are not important and you chose to focus on the music only, then no translation is needed.

AMV should not exceed 6 minutes in length. If this hampers your creativity, please contact the contest coordinator to see if an exception can be made.

Yasumicon is a family event, so videos must fit a PG-13 rating. Anything beyond PG-13 may or may not be shown.

Acceptable codecs include mpeg1 or 2, DviX, Xvid. If you are unable to submit your video with one of these codecs, we cannot guarantee that our computers can play it, but we will try.

Please submit the highest resolution possible as the contest will be shown on a large screen and we want your videos to look their best.

Your video may not include subtitles unless you added them during editing for artistic purposes.

Your video must contain at least %75 anime. (This means Japanese animation, not any animation.) Use of Japanese live action or music videos is allowed, as long as the video is still primarily an anime music video. Footage from videogame cut scenes (Final Fantasy, etc.) is also allowed. If you are unsure if your video source material is acceptable, just ask.

Each creator is limited to three (3) total entries. If you wish to send more for exhibition purposes, this is ok, but please contact us first and make sure we know which of your videos you intend for competition.

Videos made in 2003 or 2004 will be allowed to compete. Any videos made prior to 2003 are eligible for exhibition only.

Entries must be received by July 30, 2004. FTP entries must be uploaded, error free before 11:59pm that day, and snail mail entries must have arrived by then as well. (please allow at least 1-2 weeks for your entry to be delivered, or send via priority or express mail.)

Awards will be given in the categories of drama/romance, action, and comedy, as well as best of show. If we receive a large number of good entries, we may add other categories to recognize outstanding work.

All entries will be judged by members of OAS, OA, and AGA. You will be scored based on the following criteria: concept & originality, video & audio quality, sync, effort, and general effect. Your detailed scores will be available to you after the contest, along with any input and feedback we can offer (including crowd reactions at the con, for those unable to attend).

Winners will be announced and promoted on www.orangeanime.com.

By submitting a video, you agree that we may show your video at any time as filler between blocks in the OA J-pop room, or at any future OA or OAS events.

We reserve the right to not show a video based on content or quality, but every effort will be made to let everyone's work be seen.

FTP info will be posted in this thread as soon as it is ready in a couple days.

If you wish to send your entry via snail mail, please send to the following address on a cd or dvd:

I just may do something for this. I have a jpop music video idea in my head already that I had planned on trying out.

It is likely I may be able to attend this con aswell, since I have family in Ft Lauderdale FL, and just found out about this con recently.

yeah, definitely check the con out. last year was great, and this year should be twice as awesome with two days of good con stuff, all for free.

also, I wanted to make sure it's clear, you don't have to make something new for the contest. if you have a video that fits this category made anytime since January 1, 2003, it can compete.

Anyway, I can't find my video but I am making a new one for you set to a song in the escaflowne movie OST (Not "Sora" or Sora's counterpart. ~,^).

So I hope you will be pleasantly surprized... If I work my ass of it may get done today or tomorrow... I hope you didn't void my ftp account.. =(

Anyhow right now I am just thinking about encoding to highest bitrate's DivX without logo...

ah, cool, I love that whole soundtrack, so it'll be interesting to see what you picked. your FTP account is still the same, so you'll be fine for an upload whenever you're ready. do email or pm me when you've got it uploaded, though, and I'll check it for you and make sure there are no errors.

But just so everyone knows, it's FF9 to Dance of Curse II.

And it doesn't suck. :!O:!O:!O

Is it okay if I put it in the database, Matt?

hm...we could probably show it, since I doubt much of the audience will notice the difference. someone had asked a similar question before, and when I asked the rest of the OAS members, the concensus was that Korean music would be ok, even though that would be the only non-Japanese thing heard in the room during the con.

SQ: got your email, and emailing you back now. tried to im you, but didn't look like you were online.

This time, your email won't work for some nonsentical reason. (MAILER DAEMON says: "inbox no longer recieving mail" or somesuch).

So, I give you my email here, HOPING, you will read it... o.o
---

Hey,

I encoded the uncompressed file to huffy with LAME Mp3 compressed sound, and th

at came out at 115mb. The AMV is only 1:50, and the resolution is 320x224...

Now, as an mpeg2 I had it on the resize-fulscreen(whatever) property, so I figu

red it was okay. Regardless, It was a game and widescreen or other aspect ratio

s I tried smushed the video so I wasn\\\'t sure what to do with it. So I just l
ef
t it at what it was ripped at...

.

Wierd. WS_FTP Can\\\'t get the host entry, but Internet Explorer seems to be fi
ne
with your FTP. Okay. Whatever.

Anyway, When encoded to Xvid 1 Pass Quality, at 10000 bitrate, the footage was

blocky. While with MPEG2 it made my credits look all interlaced, as well as the

heavy motion(You\\\'ll find out what I\\\'m talking about later). But the main
stu
ff in the AMV was fine, so I just left it that way. I believe the bitrate on th

at one was 20000... MPEG1 I didn\\\'t even try since I figured that\\\'d give m
e wo
rse quality. DivX I didn\\\'t try because I realized I didn\\\'t have the codec
to
encode with. MPEG4 V2 probably would\\\'ve worked out, but you\\\'d have to ins
tall
a new codec on your computer. Anyway.

I\\\'ll just upload the huffy in a winRAR file and see how that works out.
PS:

Okay, the huffy within winRAR is 85mb and it\'s been uploaded. Awaiting to see
if it works on your end. =p

SQ: I'll check your entry and get back to you. it should be ok. don't know what was up with all those different encodes, but at that size, a huffy copy should play just fine anyway.

don't know what was up with the email. I've received other emails over the past couple days no problem, even something new just now, so I have no idea what could've caused that.

Matt,

I made a topic in Video Software help.

They said if I wanted my video to look good I'm pretty much screwed unless I go with Real(Or quicktime).

Which should be interesting. 0.o

But, I'll leave it all up to you. You seem pretty smart. =p

Good luck with the contest, hope everything goes fine.

I don't know, I never use quicktime, and I despise anything associated with Real media. I can't promise that our computers would play either.

just dl-ed your entry, but I can't open the rar file. can you just upload the huffy file as is, without compressing it? 115 megs is really not a problem.
