Mac Video Editing

Postby Surgical~Shotgun » Sun Jul 04, 2004 12:02 am

Okay, I want to do intensive video editing, and I want my computer to keep up with me while I'm doing it. So I've decided to get a Mac with Final Cut Pro HD.

Now here's the problem: I don't know how powerful the hardware should be.

Would an eMac work well for video editing?
How bout' a PowerBook?
An iBook?
Have you guys had any problems editing on your Macs that you could tell?

I've also read that Apple is coming out with a new iMac.

Also, can Macs capture video off of a TV?

Thanks guys.

To tell u the truth Macs are the only thing used in the graphic editing business...aside from linux clusters used for rendering...theyre the best u can find for graphic work...

the new G4 and G5s can take normal PCI cards though im not sure which cards have Mac drivers with them...u might be able to find some opensource Mac drivers for em but look b4 buying.

Personnaly i have a good ol comp but my mom has a G4 which ive tried out too...no problems watsoever for editing...fast reliable powerfull...hey its a powerPC architecture^^ its made for graphics^^
shame no games exploit this...
but i still live by my good ol comp...haha^^

I believe its around the lines of 2.2 ghz and its not dual processor...
it also has a geforce 4 card...but which one ive never really checked...im not partial to mcs^^

it also has a super drive and lotta firewie like any good mac...
super drive again the fancy mac name for DVD r burner^^

nowadays the G4s r pretty cheap...now with th ecoming of the G5 so u might find some good deals...probably a dual processor even at a good price^^

Well ... if you want power, get yourself a PowerMac G5, but anything greater than 1.2 GHz G4 would be good ... but don't buy an eMac ... they're too cheap and don't do well with video editing.

However, if you're going on the road for your video editing, get a PowerBook (although, personally, I'd wait until they put a G5 in a Powerbook before I buy one ... I would guess a good year or two before that happens, LOL)

If you want to capture video from TV, there are two solutions: via PCI and via Firewire. I would personally prefer Miglia's AlchemyTV DVR for PCI ( http://www.miglia.com/products/video/al ... index.html ) and Formac DVR for Firewire ( http://www.formac.com ).

Hope that makes some sense.
Yeah ... I use a Mac ... it works and I like it.

thats bull;; while video editing with a standard g4 in final cut pro the system lagged and crashed fewer times than when editing with a g5;; the g5 in this case never crash;; both were experimented while making a vid with tons of effects.

Surgical~Shotgun wrote:Would an eMac work well for video editing?

No! eMacs are for people who want to surf the internet & type in Microsoft Word.

Surgical~Shotgun wrote:An iBook?

No!

Surgical~Shotgun wrote:Have you guys had any problems editing on your Macs that you could tell?

Nope, works like a dream.

Surgical~Shotgun wrote:I've also read that Apple is coming out with a new iMac.

Yes, the iMac G5 in September (probably 1.8-2.0GHz)

Surgical~Shotgun wrote:Also, can Macs capture video off of a TV?

Most definitely. (capture cards, DV-Bridge, ForMac, EyeTV)
