AMVapp Icon competition!

Postby AbsoluteDestiny » Wed Jun 30, 2004 6:13 am

As the new guides and the AMVapp are nearing final release, the last few finishing touches need to be added.

At the moment the AMVapp is in need of some windows icons. The installer is the default NSIS installer icon and there are now two GUI applications that both need icons.

So, I'm asking anyone out there who think they can make a good icon for a windows application to give it a try.

There's not much I can offer as a prize except praise from me and a forum title of your own choice.

The icons that need making are:

- AMVapp Installer Icon
- Premiere AVS Plugin GUI Icon
- AMV Resize Calculator GUI Icon

Each icon should have both a 32x32 and a 16x16 version. Both icons should have a 16 colour pallete.

To make the icons, you may want to use the program Icon Edit.

Submissions are to be made to me by email at ian@absolutedestiny.org - please save all icons in the standard .ico form.

There is a one week deadline for judging - the best icon for each application that I recieve before July 7th will be selected. If an application doesn't have an icon then this deadline will be extended until someone can make one :)

Tips for Icon Creation:

- Try and make your icon functional - it should be a good representation of what the application does.
- Try and avoid making icons from larger images. Resizing a larger image down to icon size is rarely a sucessful approach when dealing with frame sizes this small. It can be used to give a basic idea of structure but for an icon to look good it will need to be tinkered with on a pixel to pixel basis.
- Include text only if it is readable. Ugly non-comprehensible text is no use to anyone.
- Above all try and make it look pretty :)

A big thank you in advance to anyone who can rise to this challenge. I'm looking forward to the entries :)

I made one for my scrapped editing package, though you probably don't need an icon of Shinobu. :P

I have an idea that I might attempt after work, provided I have enough time before the Spiderman 2 showing I'm going to.

One can always more Shinobu-chan!

On-topic, I will see what I can do, between work cycles here in the good ol' Army.

Is this a requirement or a recomendation? (the 16 bit color thing)
Most people should have support for 32 bit.... and they look so much more prettier. Not to mention 16 color icons tend to make the application seem outdated in my opinion, and this is a brand spankin new version.
Well I'll see if I can cook up something anyway ^_^

You can be creative with only 16 colours. The Avisynth icon looks nice and that's only 16 colours.

If you really want to use a larger pallette you can but it will be marked against you in judging consideration.

Read my last post.

I dont want to go changing the requirements now as it would go against the people who have already submitted to the contest.

There's nothing to stop you from making a 16-bit color icon, but only using 256 of the colors. :P

Except I asked for 16 colours not 16bit.

Ohhh... That makes sense. :|

I thought it was 16-bit. No wonder it was a stupid question. :P

Choose your favorite response:

That's what I said: There's nothing to stop you from making a 256 color icon, as long as you use only 16 of the colors.

16... 2^16... Come on, what's a few tens of thousands of colors between friends...? :P
