Wildercon 2004 AMV Contest

Finally I'm able to annouce this in its entirity :D

This contest is being held during Wilderoon '04 from the 6th of August to the 8th of August.

There are 3 categorys to enter:
General - As the name states, pretty much anything goes
Comedy - For those with a flare for making us laugh
Pure - For the pure devotee to AMV's, a category of pure skill

There will be prizes awarded for all three categorys as well as a grand prize winner, though they will be exchanged to vouchers for any international winners.

Please goto the Events section on the Wildercon to find out more :)

We've got an FTP for those who don't wish to post their entrys, as well as an automated web entry form :P

Feel free to email me or contact me on the boards if you have any queries that the information on the site doesn'y help with.

Hmm, a contest in the UK... I might submit a video...

May I ask who of you guys is going to be there? Flying near there is cheap, maybe it would be worth it for me ;)

I tried to send it via the provided ftp but got twice a "server not found" error some time after I hit the "submit" button...

How does this ftp system work ? It only asks us to locate the file on our hard drive...then does it do some ftp with some code on the server ???

That's how it's supposed to work...

I'll talk to our tech guy and get him to post an alternate ftp link.

Submitted the info for my entry.

Sad, my actual video would've fitted perfectly on the pure-category but I can't let it premiere due to the Connichi rules before their contest... damn you MAGI2 :P
So, I submitted Strike On.

Dunno if I can come yet.

I don't get how your "pure" Category reflects Skill... That's like the easiest part.

Why don't you post a list of those who've entered, so we know if the original FTP was successful.

The reason that the 'Pure' category is about skill, is because you have to demonstrate the very basics of editing (ie cutting, timing, combination of media & ability to convey the correct emotonal state) without relying on additional effects to cover-up any weaker points(much like how pop artists nowadays utilise an 'Auto-tune' to correct their off key moments.)

Over years I have witnessed how parts of the AMV community have become perverted by the overuse of effects packages and poor combinations of songs and anime which lessen the effort and acheivements of those few that are trying to expand the form to a new level.

I have seen many video's that have utilised additional effects, such as direct frame editing, blending or warping, to great effect and have truly elevated the video by doing so, but in the same breath I've seen almost twice as much that abuse these effects with no moderation. This is why our con still has a General & a Comedy category that have no restrications on the effects or changes you wish to do. THis allows those of you that feel either reliant on these effects, or those that have made a good video into a great one by their use, to still be able to enter and display them (After all I may want to affect some change in attitude, but I'm not so bold or arrogant to demand that all entries fall into my vision of an AMV, it's for the public to decide that! 8))

Also, i'm sure many of you have seen that there is also a faction of people out there that get their hands on a copy of after-effects and then damage their video with unneccessary effects, much to their own downfall. In it's own way the 'Pure' category can help protect these people from sabotaging their own work unintentionally.

The 'Pure' category at its inception was also made to make one final, simple point, and it's one that is sometimes overlooked. This category can be entered by someone with a basic video editing package(ie something like Microsoft AVI editor or DDClip< I wonder how many of you still use it? :?>) and have as much chance of winning with their intrinsic talent as someone using Premiere or Avid. I want it to act as a level playing field to help strengthen people in the very core basics of making a good video so that when they go onto making ones that they feel needs a particular added effect, it'll only be there because they now KNOW that can't enhance the video anymore with traditional cutting & synching.
I hope this has not only answered your question, but has encouraged you and others to enter. If you have read this and still see it as the 'easy' option then prove that statement to me with a video :)
After all, as mother always says "Actions are louder than words..." :P

The FTP is emailed to you within 24 hours of filling in the registration form.

That's because our website guru is currently away on 'compassionate' leave and as such we didn't spot the error until today! Everyone has been emailed apart from BdaWiD who's email addrss doesn't seem to work :(
