New Computer Needed Help Me Decide! - Old For Sale!

Postby Ultimagamemasta » Mon May 24, 2004 7:03 am

I need a new computer for video editing. My little Athlon-M 1400+ running at 1.4Ghz with 256MB of RAM 30GB Harddrive, CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive, 32MB Shared Graphics and such isn't fast enough. I need to also start ripping Playstation games to get into movie files.

What kind of computer (desktop or laptop) would be good for me under $1000. I need most definately an AGP graphics card. Cheap LCD Monitor needed too!

ok, this might be what you need, but somebody needs to put it together
(get most of it from www.newegg.com)
$178 intel p4 2.8ghz prescott core processor
$100 Asus p4s800d-E deluxe
I wouldn't reccomend an lcd because they're very expensive, but since you asked:
$328 CMV CT-529A 15" LCD Monitor w/ Speakers -RETAIL
$123 Geil Ultra Series Value Dual Channel 184 Pin 512MB(256MBx2)
DDR PC-3200 w/ Blue Heatspreader
$70 Optorite 8X DVD+RW/-RW Drive Model DD0405, Retail
$160 eVGA nVIDIA GeForce FX5700 ULTRA Video Card
$50 POWMAX DEMON Black/Red with Black/Red Interior Mid Tower case
$71 VANTEC VAN-420A (420W) Black Aluminum Power Supply

I'd reccomend that you get your hard drive from your nearest computer retailer (i.e. best buy, circuit city, comp usa, ect.) because you can get rebates for everything cheaper. If you dont have anybody to put a computer together, well then you're gonna be screwed with an overpriced, crappy computer. This might cost a little bit much but hey, it would be a screaming monster.

I agree 100% with the config you submitted. I just want to bring something more:

If you want to do video editing, there are some conditions required :

- 1GO of memory
- Motherboard such as the asus deluxe, that can asume a lot of work
- A double-task processor, such as a P4 3.0ghz, or an athlon FX 64.

...whatever you're smoking, I want some.

Those specs aren't REQUIRED by video editing, but they optimize the "experience". I work fine with an Athlon XP 1700+ on an Abit KG7-RAID with 512MB of PC2100.

Atomx uses a p2 333mhz computer to push out quality videos. As NicholasDWolfwood said it isn't required to edit video.

Here is my current configuration:

--AMD Athlon XP 2600+
--768 MB PC2700 DDR Ram
--Soyo KT333 Dragon-lite
--420 GB total HDD space
--Radeon 9600 XT AGP Graphics Card
--Samsung CD-RW 32x10x40
--Iomega All-Format 4x DVD burner
--Sound Blaster Live! Value

It works quite well for video editing. I'm not sure at the moment what the prices of the individual components are as I assembled it several months ago. I imagine it wouldn't cost much at all to build though. It didn't cost me too much.

no kidding. . .

some of the best editing was done before the gigahertz barrier was broken.

It's a good retailer, I bought my first PC from them. I have been buying from them for 5 years and haven't been burned yet. :) I had a dvd burner from them quit in the first week, I called them and they sent a replacement, shipped free, and picked up the old one. :D They did the same for a refurbished 21" monitor that my church bought.

You want to try building a computer check this out.

Yes those are sweet and you could probably build one for the same, if not cheaper price as one of those tigerdirect systems...

Shuttle SS51G $175
P4 2.4 GHz $125
1 GB RAM $175
DVD-RW $80
200 GB h/d $150
WinXP Home $100

About $900 after adding keyb/mouse/spkrs. Add $$ to use AGP video card instead of on-board graphics. AMD systems run a bit cheaper.

The SS51G is their bottom-of-the-line case. Higher end cases range from $300 -$400. See newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com for pictures and specs.

You knew I'd say this, but I'd rather get an Athlon 64 system for the same amount. I believe someone posted a link to an Athlon 64 system for under $1,000 and that'll smoke a 2.4 Ghz P4 (esp. since it beats a 3.4 Ghz P4 at almost all benchmarks).
