200 GB Seagate HD

Postby Alpha_Hazard » Tue May 25, 2004 10:19 am

Hey there everyone...Yesterday I realized my 80 gig was going the way of all...silcone...anyway, I recently got paid so I decided to check out new hard drives. I went to best buy and found a 200 GB Seagate for 199.00 with a 70.00 rebate...Now granted I'll have to wait almost a month for the rebate, but it;s still a great deal. I had checked out circuit city too, and they have a 200gb western digital for 139.99 after rebate...I think it was 179.99 so that's a 40.00 rebate...anyway. I got the seagate, because thats what my computer came with and I haven't had any trouble with it yet...(I have three hard drives) We'll see if it holds up longer than my 80 gig...which lasted about a year...how sad.

I've had so many Seagates die on me it isn't even funny. I've had substansially less Western Digitals die.

The biggest problem that I've had with seagates has been the drive physically destroying itself within the first month of having it. Usually if they survive their first month they last a reasonably long time. Unfortunately in my experiences with them, they normally didn't make it past the 3rd week.

Yeah, that's what was happening with my Maxtor 80 gig, it started making awful noises and I found out it was destroying itself from the inside. Fortunately the warranty says it is covered so...

In any case, I have decided that I was be more careful about my online purchases from now on, because I found out that the pricewatch source I got my Maxtor from was rather low rated...live and learn...

Anyway, I figure since my original hard drive is in pretty good shape I'd give this a try, and now that I know what to look and listen for I'll be able to detect any problems (hopefully) early on.

On a personal note, I find your name quite appropriate for this post...heheh...

man, why does it always highlight the html code too? you'd think they would have established some sort of parameters for recognizing code...I don't even know what I'm saying.

I'm sorry! :o I wasn't trying to rain on your parade or anything, just sharing personal experience, that's all. And I agree Maxtors are le' suck reguardless. I do think seagates are good drives, I think I just came across alot of bad eggs over the years.

I don't think I'll ever buy anything besides a Western Digital in the future though. They've always been worth whatever they cost for my purposes.

Oh one other odd thing that I noticed with the last seagate that I bought was that despite being labeled ATA166, My current WD drive @ ATA133 runs circles around it in any application I could think to run, so meh. I'll just stick with what I know works.

I hope that yours does well for you. I'll give you 70/30 odds in your favor of it working. That's about all the confidence I got though.

There's ATA 166? I wasn't aware, AFAIK there was SATA150 and I think SATA v2 is supposeldy 200-300.

Anyway, as for reliability I've never had a WD go bad, in fact I was so impressed with the ATA100 120GB 8MB cache I bought about 18 months ago, that I bought 2 more, but the SATA models, hooked it up to a RAID card and it was sweetness
