Cowboy Bebop Perfect Collection. Import or US made?

Postby Furankurinu Peteru » Tue Sep 03, 2002 4:37 pm

Is there a difference between the Import of the CB box set ($49.99 at discountanimedvd.com) and the US distributed version ($499.99 at Amazon.com) besides the $450 price difference? Is there a quality difference or are they exactly the same?

You're better off just buying the the individual discs $153 for all six of them, instead of the box set. The $cheap$ box set is bootlegged so don't bother with those.

I find it upsetting that Pioneer pulled crappy "limited edition" bullshit on the boxset. This is one of the only boxsets I've seen where it actually costs MORE then buying the discs separately.

It looks like the discs were released by Bandai and the boxset is released by Pioneer, so did Pioneer have to sub-license off of Bandai or Sunrise? That could account for the 'premium cost'. I doubt any boxset extras could justify a x2 - x3 higher price tag.

Or, too put it another way, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I thought the Perfect Sessions were about $180-$240, depending on if you go online or in normal stores. Why the hell are they charging $499?

I think mine cost about $180 online somewhere, and it's legitimate.

Klinky- Actually the price wasn't higher, at least by retail price anyway. I think the reason the price Furankurinu quoted is so high is because there were only 9,000 of the box sets distributed in America, and they're almost impossible to find (believe me, I've looked). That may account for the higher price. Before they all dissapeared from retail stores you could generally find the set for between $159-199.

Furankurinu-Anything that's Region 'Free' encoded (or not encoded, however you like to look at it  ) is usually bootleg. But dokidoki covered that point already, so I'm wasting air.

I am still going to blame Pioneer for only making 9000....

The point? Ehhh?

The cheapest legit version I saw was about $382. :p. Mainly it's due now to supply and demand. I wonder how Pioneer would churn a profit if 9000 boxes were sold @ $200 x 9000, thats "only" 1.8million. I bet the bebop license was atleast a couple hundred K if not even a million :\ .

Hmmm, anyone actually have real numbers on how much a series cost to license it ??

http://www.bestprices.com has then for $21.04 each + shipping. 6 DVDs = 126.24. I am guess maybe $20 shipping. $146 isn't that bad.

Looks like they don't have DVD 3 in stock though  .

Bandai handled the individually packaged DVDs, but Pioneer handled the Box sets.

No Bandai handled the Box Set...

Here's how it works:

Bandai is the producer/licensor. They license the shows, hire dubbing houses to dub the show, hire a translator to do subtitles, then hire an authoring house to make DVDs (and previously a different authoring house to do VHS). They then send it to their distributor.

Pioneer has been a big distributor ever since the days of Laserdisc (remember their Japanese parent company is Pioneer LDC or Pioneer LaserDisc Company) and Bandai's distributor is Pioneer. Therefore Pioneer handles the distribution to various retail outlets of Bandai's product, but they have no input into what those things being distributed are.

I'd just like to give a big "Thank you" to klinky for posting the link to that site. I've never seen prices that low before.
