OK, offtopic. Anyway, Evangelion has a certain appeal to the apocalyptic personality that some find depressing, but really to me is optimistic.
That's actually the way I felt about it, too. It depressed the hell out of my brother, but neither of Eva's endings makes me feel bad - actually, quite the opposite
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

As much as I disliked both endings, I was too disturbed by EoE to be pissed about it...

Yeah, i would say that the ending of EOE is a bit unsettling.

Indeed, The End of Evangelion, not just the ending but as a whole, is very unsettling, and depressing. And yet, it has the most uplifting messege I've ever encountered in any movie.
Look at all my trials and tribulations
Sinking in a gentle pool of wine.
Don't disturb me now, I can see the answers
'Till this evening is this morning, life is fine.

watch some of the pokemon movies, very happy times.. .. uh.. i was kidnapped and forced! FORCED I SAY!!!

well okay maybe not, but they do usually have uplifting messages, but it's the same usual stuff, friendship, togetherness, aspects of your birth don't determine your future role in life, yada-yada 8)

Yeah, I see what you're saying... the thing about EoE/EoTV's messege that makes it so uplifting is that it's optimistic despite the circumstances your in. Whenever anyone watches EoE they always come to me and say "Oh man, that's so depressing, most depressing thing ever." and then I show them the qoute that goes something like "Anywhere on Earth can be Heaven if you make it that way" or something. ;) So uplifting!

That, and it also shows that in the end, the ultimate enemy of humanity is humanity itself.

You know, all that "anywhere can be heaven" crap doesn't really help me feel better about the extinction of 99.9999% of the human race...
