The strange ways of the newbie (ranting and insulting here)

Postby Bushido Philosopher » Sun Sep 01, 2002 2:21 pm

THE pet peeve of everyone in this place.

Just looking over some posts and found one that especially bugged me out of my mind:
How do you get FMVs from Playstation games?

Now ordinarily we would all be nice to the newbie and just point him to the right guides, but then I looked at how many posts he's done and it was te first one he's ever made. :?

Now I have a question:
Should we really answer the question at all if they don't have enough sense to just look for it in the guides? And for their first post to be a total obvious answer....

Not to be some kinda jerk or anything, but cmon, it's RIGHT THERE IN FREAKING FRONT OF YOU!!! (Plus, other clueless ones have asked the questions already so it's also in the forum database.)

However, of course there are the newbies that have actually been OK and have at least TRIED to read the guides. Admittedly, the guides are a bit confusing for the new user -- my opinion anyway.

So maybe we should just ignore the obvious questions or get the moderators to delete them or something?

Just my little ranting....sorry. :)

I have a feeling this is what jbone would say:

Jbone: This belongs in the Off Topics forum.

Anyway, newb's or not, people are ignorant at heart and too highly hasty.

Sorry can't do that.....Phade has a policy on this site that we atleast try to answer or to direct the poster in the right direction. So they can get the answer there looking for. By just deleting posts like that your detracting the interest of others. And thats not how Phade wants things run. Its just better to either you yourself ignore those kind of posts or if you do reply make it a sensible reply.....not a flame.

I would argue that an appropriate response is to point someone to the appropriate guide, not to give them a full answer, and politely but firmly remind them to check the guides in the future when they have questions. Come to think about it, maybe the Adopt-A-Newbie thing isn't such a bad idea...Limit one per creator...

I wouldn't say that, as this is related to AMVs, and the Off-Topic forums are so stupid and inane through lack of moderatiohn that they're completely and utterly useless for any form of rational, intelligent conversation.

Ignorance is one thing. Stupidity is completely different.

Ignorant people want to learn. Stupid people want their hands held.

It's the stupid people who piss everyone off.

Some people get pissed off when you expect them to *gasp* do a little reading and research to find an answer. I believe these are the people that most here are complaining about.

And, personally, I have better things to do than hold someone's hand as they make their first video.

If someone doesn't understand the guides, it means that person does not have the rudimentary knowledge and/or common sense needed to do what the guides tell them to do. In such a case, what one needs to do is [erform some research and learn to udnerstand what the guides say to do. Posting generically "CAN SUM1 PLZ HEL PME I DUN UNDRSTAN THE GIDES" (in so many words) makes one seem like they want their hand held, and aren't willing to do any of the work they ultimately must if they want to produce anything even remotely watchable.

I think it's my turn to disagree There are a few things in the guides that i do not understand...mainly regarding Hardware material...
And I wound consider myself a total fucktard just cuz i don't get some pointers...
some that you would probably consider...basics...And even if I AM a fucktard...i'm here tryin to learn...and improve...you should not flame the first guy that appears and asks a rather Beatleheaded question...
of course some of them just piss us of...i can see that...

this may be my only chance to correct jbone ever so here goes:

YOU SPELT INSANE WRONG ITS NOT INANE!!

wow that felt really good
adopt a newbie is a great idea, when they sign up they get paired with a creater who helps them out until they become good enough to adopt their own newbie.
