Um, there are 2 musical acts. Maybe not Japanese bands, but they're not all Otakon...

That they're not all Otakon? Not really. Otakon is getting to the point where it's almost too big to be enjoyable. There's something to be said about mid-range and smaller cons.

That is solely your opinion...if you want smaller cons that's on you, but I want a much bigger Con to com out of New Jersey.

If you want a big con, go to Otakon, simple as that. As I see it, the current con distribution (with a small number of large cons spread out equally and a bunch of smaller cons inbetween) works out just fine. However, in terms of that big Northeast region, ANext has to complete with a ton of New England cons, not to mention Otakon and BAAF. They can't go big if the demand isn't there...

Well, Otakon is the monster of all east coast cons....
I make the obvious Mecca and Disney World Jokes everytime I go.
But, recently it's become so impersonal, huge, and combersome
that I may not go this year. The hotels must be reserved like a year
ahead of time, the lines take hours and the convention center is so
full it makes me people phobic. Glad AB will be held at a convention
center next year ,but, in an odd way I hope it dosn't become the
next otakon. If size is what matters Otakon is for you... This why
I liked AB year one cuase it was big ,but, not overcrowded (after
they caped the SAT crowd size :)) I may goto to ANext instead of
otakon becuase my videos may have a chance in hell at this con.
Otakon the contest seems to consits on master submissions.
If I go I'll probally be going to see my AMV brothers-in-arms again
and not for any of the real events particaully not the crowded ones.

I guess it's worth mentioning at this point that last year's ANEXT saw submissions from Absolute Destiny, Kusoyaro, Tom the Fish, Doki Doki, DW, Vlad, and others.

Yes, but none of them won "Drama" or "Judge's Award," and "Comedy" was pretty close!

All in all, it's not about winning... it's about the crowd having a fucking amazing time watching the videos, and that's exactly what they did. One thing I like about smaller cons is that when people watch the AMV contest, they really get into it. The yelps and screams and clapping at each showing was amazing.

As Mike has already mentioned, it's not about winning the awards or anything of the sort. In fact, there technically weren't any awards to win, unless I totally missed the e-mail about prizes :-P. Then again, perhaps next year will be different, so my point may be moot.

What I'm getting at is that regardless of awards, a number of us submitted since we were told the contest needed some solid entries. A favor if you will. Hell, if there was a "non-competing" checkbox, perhaps some of us would've checked it?

It's really a matter of making a good contest for the con-goers. Everyone seems to forget that portion of the contest and only focus on the "winning" portion. You gotta remember that the contest is for both the creators *and* the audience. You gotta try and entertain them too.

Hey, fact of the matter is, no, we're not Otakon. As such, we cannot AFFORD to fly over several Japanese bands for concerts. The acts we do have are excellent and get great responses from the audience. (They're also Japanese-American, but I guess it doesn't matter to you unless they actually LIVE in Japan.)

We'll also have a Japanese guest, obviously, but we're in negotiations with a few and don't have only one to make a definite announcement on.

When you know exactly how much of a budget a small con has to work on in its THIRD year - need I point out Otakon is reaching its eleventh - then you can knock the lineup. Fact is, the only way the con will grow is if people come out and support it.
