I also found on a few days ago that the 1st 3 episodes of Gravitation are going to be dubbed this summer and they're selling the DVD's where you can watch them uncut w/ subs. The other anime that I ordered that I believe is bootleg is Violinist of Hameln, but if it's good quality bootleg I guess it;s ok, BUT that's only because it came out in 1996 or 1997 in Japan and it's pretty darn likely that it will NEVER come to the USA. I'm angry at the Gravitation bootleggers though :O

I would also add that anyone latching onto quick, cheap bootlegs as a source for AMV footage should save themselves some money and moral quandries BECAUSE it is quite likely that you'll not be able to successfully rip the DVD if it is a bootleg (you name the problems, they'll happen, all entirely capable of foiling grand AMV plans) Then there's nothing you can do but go out and buy the licensed DVD like you should have in the first place!!

Also, a word on fantastic E-bay deals and so-called legit "power sellers" in general: E-bay is the perfect place to sell stolen goods, I don't care if it's a DVD-R drive, a plushie or a case of Bic pens. It happens all the time. Not saying that a DVD you buy that's not a bootleg isn't stolen, but I can guarantee that the bootleg you are buying is the same thing as that laptop computer that "fell off the back of a truck." Now would you buy a laptop if you knew it was a stolen good? If yes, then you're a lost cause. If no, then for God's sake why are you buying bootlegs??

"D-Me" (default title until something cooler occurs to me) - uh... this one's still in the "I wanna make it" stage, but did get to 5% at one point.

I wonder if there's some way to repent for the sin of bootleg purchasing...

My local library (as politically-correct an instutution as you'll ever find) somehow acquired several Love Hina DVDs in their rental collection. My dismay/shock/amusement at this aside, in examing the actual DVDs one can tell (if one knows the signs) that they are bootlegs. Now what crazed fanboy foisted these upon my straight-laced library?!

In the interest of exposing more of the public to anime, however, I have as yet not advised the library that they're renting stolen goods.

A buddy of mine, (poor, sad chap that he is) bought a bunch of anime off of Half.com and recieved HUGE discounts. one of them is subbed so badly that you know it's a bootleg, and the other is Evangelion on 2 DVDs. creepy, ne? Both look incredibly professional, but...

They're bootlegs.

Video quality and legality aside, the disks themselves are pretty bad too. I bought the Ryvius set at the start of last summer (last one I'll get though) and they worked fine. Then, halfway through the third (last) disk, I finished my secion, hit stop, and left for the weekend. When I came back, the dvd player had burned a hole in the disk. Not sure if it was the fault of the disk or the player (it was a cheap one from costco), but they were both ruined. Now We always make sure to eject our disks when were done, and not trust the player even when turned off.

There it is, tell me what you think of it.
Yeah, it's bootleg. For one, there's a suspicious logo in the lower-right corner. For another, the other DVDs this seller has up are all bootlegs, and very obviously so.
I really wished I'd noticed this thread earlier...
