Hmm, it appears yours is quite large - 116 megs... any chance you could scale that down?

As we speak, I'm dropping a set of songs to the mailbox. See if you find any of them interesting enough to put up in the outbox among others. They should present a nice variety of modern/avant-garde stuff, anyways...

hmm - riddle me this...

I tried getting either of the WIP files, but it says 'failed to open file' whenever I try to download. Any idea why?

Also - another thing - seeing how you have a general AMV downloads section, and you have my Wasteland in there - if you want, I can send you a 'final' version of the video which looks a bit better, and has some of the effects towards the final part smoothed out.

I'll drop it to the inbox tomorrow if you don't mind. Might as well distribute it somehow...

Thanks for the heads up on requiem. I knew it sounded familiar but I couldn't place it. I think it's also a title of an anime movie.

I uploaded a little "preview" of my video. This is why I wanted the song, I actually put together the clips as a example of my source so I could show it to people and ask for song suggestions. Then I thew some difrent songs in the audio track and requiem just clicked. All timing is incidental and this in NOT a work in progress, just a teaser to show you guys what I'm looking at. Enjoy.

Hmm... do you have download permissions on some folders but not others? It seems like I can only download files from the folders for songs and the videos you made, but not others (including WIP).

Check your permissions, or should I check my own settings?

It's not just you. The permissions on the WIP section are set so that they are unreadable to the public.

Hmm, yea.

Anyways, I'll be listening through more songs tomorrow, and I'll see if I have any definite ideas....

I have a lot of KareKano footage on my hard drive right now that I'm working with for another video, but if I can figure out (or someone suggests me) something that would make a good instrumental video for that series, I'd definitely try and get something in for this weekend.

I'd like to try something that's not heavy for once (ever notice the excess of King Crimson among my suggestions?), but I'm trying to figure out what...

Otohiko: All songs have been moved to the "Outbox" and added to the list. An improved "Wasteland" would be great.

Pen-Pen: Incidental timing? Pretty good incidental timing. I just moved that video to the WIP section as well.

Permissions: I dunno. I checked the permissions and they are consistently "read-only" for all groups other than root for the entire outbox, along with every other portion of my FTP site other than the "Inbox", which is "read-write" for everyone. Are you having problems with even seeing the files in those folders, or just with downloading them? You shouldn't have issues with either - but the more you all tell me, the better I can look for info on any bugs I might have to work around.

The size of my video: I'll encode a small version tonight. The one there is so big because it's 13min long and very high-motion most of the way through, and I haven't had time to fiddle with the settings too much, but I should be able to get much better compression out of it with a little tweaking.

I'm a dumbass:

The permissions problem wasn't the folders, it was the files. Some of the files (including DownWithPants' video preview) were set without group permissions. I'm not sure why, but at least now I can reset all the files' permissions and continue to do so as more are added.

You might want to try downloading again - it should work this time.

I'm glad to see this really under way.

I just downloaded DownWithPants' video, plan to see it after CompSci today. I'll also test transcoding it to XviD to see how that goes.

I also made a 50mb "small" encoding of the "Third Stone from the Sun" video. It's a little ugly, but a faster download. Further adjustment will definately be necessary for encoding of final version.

And I finally got around to putting up an avatar. Yeah!

DownWithPants - nice work. The sync is clear, the mood matches, you handled much of it very creatively - if only mine could be so polished.

Hopefully mine will be that polished once I'm done with them. Which brings me to the question - has anyone seen the "Third Stone" video yet, and if so what do you think of the idea of using overlays to move it along through the regions where it could really use some help (like much of the first five minutes)?

Rose, I watched some of Third Stone. There are a lot of things to sync to, so it makes sense to ignore many of them, especially in the busier passages. One thing that's bugging me, though, is the opening couple minutes. They look almost like they were made in one huge cut (I'm not sure, as I haven't seen FLCL in a while). To be frank, I find it a little difficult to watch for fourteen minutes straight (actually, I didn't get past minute 7 or so), but chances are that's just me.

DWP's is very nice. I haven't seen the source, and I still like it.

Pen^2's is also good, even if it is slightly reminiscint of Kevin Caldwell's "Phantom of the Opera". Or maybe that was intended

Kalium - no, it's not just you. The opening few minutes really do drag, and there's another point in the middle that could really use some help (I'm guessing that you stopped watching somewhere around the "rain-bridge" scene). The last seven minutes, oddly enough, are much better than the first seven in my opinion, but they also include a section that I have to imagine would get a very strong love/hate response both visually and musically (the "chaos" section as I would like to dub it).

I think I will go ahead with making some masks and playing with some overlays in the portions that just crawl along right now, mixing in some material of similar mood from later in the series to give the viewer more to look at without making the speed of motion or fequency of transitions too great for the slow and low pace of the music in those areas of the video.

I haven't had too much time to work on the actual video-making yet, between my academic work and messing with the server to get that to work right, and it shows. There are only two reasons for my posting the video in its current state at all:

I want to encourage other people to put up their ideas even as they're just beginning to come together, to encourage peer review and idea exchange.

I wanted to determine whether or not anyone could stand the song nevermind the video. It has some very pretty passages, but also a lot of "noise" that I happen to like and see as fitting, but that I'm not so sure many other people would.
