The Windows Movie Maker Challenge

Welcome to the Windows Movie Maker Challenge. Your goal is to compete against many AMV creators ONLY using Windows Movie Maker. Why? This is the ultimate contest to prove that you don't need expensive programs like premiere or final cut pro to make a decent video. With Windows Movie Maker being free, everyone has a good shot at making decent videos. So whether you're an experienced editor or not, it's time to step back into a beginner's shoes and play on equal ground.

RULES

1. You can ONLY use Windows Movie Maker to make your video. No using premiere or after effects then importing the clips into WMM. Your cuts, edits, effects must ALL be done in WMM. This is the most important rule and I have ways of knowing if you use any outside programs. If you're gonna cheat this rule, then don't make it too obvious, however you will be cheating your dignity.

2. Footage preparation can be done with your basic DVD ripping programs, virtualdub, etc... but absolutely no cuts and edits (preparing clips is fine). No adding crazy filters in virtualdub like RGB difference or something like that. Deinterlacing, Inverse Telecine, and grain removal is fine.

3. There are no restrictions on content. See Judging below.

4. Files must be in .wmv format exported from WMM itself.

5. You must provide 3 screencaps of your WMM timeline. You can do this by pressing "print screen" on your computer and pasting it into MS Paint and saving it. Host these screencaps on your server or a free server. If you don't want to host them on a server, email me the screencaps in a zip file. Screencaps should be in .gif, .jpg, or .png only. Failure to provide 3 screencaps by the deadline will lead to disqualification.

6. You can post the video whenever you finish it. Even if you finish it the next day after reading this. Why? See Judging below.

Submitting your video

Email me the link to your video and you can make an announcement over on the amv announcments page and I will download the video and save it on my comp for the contest. You can host it on your own server if you're too embarrassed to post it in your profile to add it to local. Make sure you also email me the 3 screencaps of your wmm timeline as well. I would highly prefer uploading it to local and posting it on the amv announcments forum. Why? See judging below.

Judging

Judging will be done by a few of my friends who aren't amv creators and barely even know what the concept is. Although they know "of" them, they haven't really seen much. They don't care if you're Kevin Caldwell or Pippi Longstocking so this means anybody can participate. The judges do not know who you are and I haven't told any of them...yet. This is why it won't matter if you finish it and show it to everyone else on the .org because the judges don't even visit the .org, plus they won't care too much about violence or hentai either, in fact they may enjoy them :)

Prizes

One anime DVD of the winner's choice. Winner must provide me an address to ship the prize to. If the winner does not provide me an address within 2 weeks or so, a second place winner will be decided and the prize will be given to that person.

Deadline

When 10 entries have been recieved, I will decide a deadline.

If I kept screencaps of my timelines, I'd be all over this one. ^_^

But why the wmv requirement? Windows Movie Maker 1.0 comes with a great avi format, so it's not like conversions aren't expected of people using wmm. If you were doing a Premiere-only contest would you make people use the worst looking format instead of compressing the high quality avi to get the best output? Instead of showing you can get good quality vids using wmm, this will take the worst looking (compression wise) wmm vids and pit them against each other. That's cruel. >.<

I guess if you're using WMM 1.0 then you can make an avi.

This why more will be added later.

I use wmm2 and i export in wmv, but i then convert to avi or directly to mpg. If you want i can send you screenies that show the origanal project where i save them along with the 3 project timeline screenies. Or i can just resave them and show you a screenie where they are saved along with the mpg files. Up to you of course.

That's acceptable just as long as you have the screens.

Ok, 2 really quick questions. 1st, how many entries per person, 1 or 2? and 2nd, does this include trailers?

Trailers are fine just as long as they're done in WMM.

Probably 2 entries max per person.

For anyone who misunderstands rule #2 since I think I typed it wrong, you can use DVD rips then convert them to small avi clips to use in WMM.

x2

To be perfectly honest, I wish there was not neccesarily a WMM-only contest, but a 'no-frills' sort of contest. Like, one that allows only crossfading/dissolving footage, and that's it... I would surely go for that.

But of course, this is your contest, and I'd like to see the resulting entries...

With premiere, you can time too precisely. Try doing super fast timing in WMM. :P

hehe, yea. Still, I have seen some awesome WMM vids, not the least of which are some of Ari's

But eh, I'm not arguing with you or anything, just lamenting my lack of possible entry into a true 'minimalist' contest

Thus my wish to see a non-software-restricted one in the future.

I'd run it, even, but of course - besides the famous 'fame' picture, I have nothing of interest to offer back
