What's your price range? "Damned expensive" doesn't mean much here since alot of people wouldn't think twice about dropping $400 on a capture card.

For me, 800 bucks is expensive. I have a good paying job and all, but car payments take alot out of my paycheck. I was thinking of a card ranging $100 to $500. Thanks in advanced.

Someone will recommend the DV500, not sure if it will capture from a VCR or not since I don't have one, but it does speed up editing using the onboard processor. It can do a host off effects in realtime, which is pretty nifty.
They range around $350(used) up to $450(new). It includes a copy of Premiere and recent driver updates allow for direct MPEG2 editing(I bet it's probably slower at this then regular DV).

You can find them on eBay sometimes, brand new. That's where I got mine and since I already had Premiere, I sold the sealed copy I got with the DV500 (on eBay).
It can capture digital or analog, which is cool.
Before you buy though, you should first do some research to make sure your computer will be able to handle the card because it conflicts with alot of other things. I haven't gotten my dv500 to work yet because :
1. I am too lazy to call the support line
2. I am not very good with the technical side of computers

Anyway take a look at the Pinnacle Systems (DV500) website
http://www.pinnaclesys.com
(the forums there are pretty good).

the one capture card that I used to love,
ATI ALL-IN-WONDER Pro 4-8 meg APG,
is now giving me problems with VCR 1.0 & 2.0
built-in codec's because of the bus speeds
of my new mother board; so be careful how
you mix and match your equipment!

just a little FYI note
