Discreet is now shipping Combustion 3 for Windows, with a Mac version due in early 2004. Upgrade from 2.1 is $199, full version is $995. :?

These are also available for Windows, but note that they're not so much audio EDITING packages as they are multitracking/sequencing packages. Some versions of Cubase have extensive features for surround mixing as well.

Class On Demand sells DVD-based self-teaching materials for various video software packages, including Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Vegas, and others. They cost from $50 to a few hundred dollars. Their latest release is "Photoshop for Digital Video" ($80).

OK, this needs to go here, and I don't know why it's not here already.

Blender

URL: http://www.blender3d.org
Price: $0 (packages with manuals are available at reasonable cost)
Description: highly capable 3D modeling and animation system

Target audience:
...well I don't really know. Blender was designed by an animation studio to be used by animators, so I'd guess "professional".

Linux Editors

Post by Mikamikem » Tue Feb 10, 2004 12:03 am

Hi I would like to start making some AMVs, but I have a problem. I am running linux and do not have a DV camcorder. The first program you listed for Linux editors has either lost its support or is located somewhere else and not listed on google as I can't seem to find it. The second program requires a dv file input for all of the files you want to create the vid out of. Is this the standard? I have seen numerous posts on other sites saying that converting from say divx or mpeg to a dv file cuts the quality. I was wondering if anyone here runs linux and/or knows of a good linux movie editor. I have checked many sites and actually downloaded and installed a lot of programs and they all require dv files as input. Are there any out there that support avi or mpeg inputs? I have tried using mencoder but that program is more for conversions and not editing. If anyone has links or names that would help.

I found the Cinelerra binaries and they work so I am going to use that as it recognizes my avi file so thanks for the links. Hopefully I will actually make an AMV soon.

I finally got a DVD Drive for my computer (I've been using my Video Capture card to capture from external sources until now). What would you folks suggest I use to capture Video from my DVD Drive?

You don't need to capture video from DVD, you'll get better quality if you simply rip the contents to your hard disk.
