is it at all possible to save wmvs as a different format with some program?

Not easily.

AVISynth, DirectShowSource should do it. Just won't really get the sound for you, haven't figured that out...

u can use WMM to change it to a mock AVI, but thats bout all i know.

You can try to import the wmv into Macromedia Flash, and then export it to other file formats

If you just need the video part, import it into TMPEG and export as a high quality MPEG. The audio won't synch up but the video usually comes out ok.
