Speed up your 56k?

Postby Jonny Bebop » Sat Jan 03, 2004 4:49 pm

I just found this website http://www.onspeed.com and they are claiming that there software can speed up your 56k modem by 5 times. It only costs £25/$40 a year but is it worth it?

I've seen those things... it's just some new type of compression that supposedly makes web page files smaller, so they download more quickly.

I'm guessing it's a load of bollocks - your connection will still be the exact same speed, some web pages will just appear to load more quickly.

If it's anything like the claims of similiar services before, it will not actually speed up your downloading of video files, if that's what you're thinking.

All of the similiar services I've heard of only speed up the downloading of text webpages. Basically the server is capable of recognizing the text, compressing it, and sending it to you computer over the 56k modem. All other elements like sound, and video are usually already compressed and will not be compressed any further. So if you're surfing mostly text webpages, you'll notice that it will load faster. You'll still be waiting hours to see the movie trailer you're downloading.

I'm basing this mostly from my research of Juno Speed Band

If he has broadband you might try asking if he would like to network the computers in the house. Before I moved out of the house my step-dad let me as long as I shared half of the bill. It was a good deal.

I would, only probs is that i don't live with him (parents are divorced), so i'll just have to cough up the money myself. I saw an offer where instead of paying monthly you pay yearly, it worked out to something like £18.
