I found a fully functional PS2 Ripper!!!

Postby Bushido Philosopher » Tue Jul 23, 2002 9:53 pm

(This may look long but it's something that needs to be said)

There's one very important catch:
it can only run through pre-rendered MPEG-2 movies that the disc has.

this means that FFX (Final Fantasy X) and MGS2 (Metal Gear Solid 2) is out of the question. Games like FFX run on their own little weird movie system and so conventional PS2 rippers (if any) cannot decode them. as for MGS2, all of the "movies" are actually processed all in real-time, meaning that nothing is pre-rendered and cannot be ripped. Maybe someonw will eventually make one where it is possible to compile data into the real-time objects we see, but until that time you can forget about using this ripper for most things.

The only thing that this program can process is .PSS files, an exclusive MPEG-2 stream on the PS2, similar to like how .STR file types work on PS1 discs.

To find out if certain clips can be processed, simply open up the program. If you look through all of the directories you may find some. If you don't then that means the game is processed in real-time and therefore can't be ripped.

Everything is self-explanatory after that. You'll end up with a .m2v file and .wav file. Using your knowledge of video you can figure out that these two can be processed together in TMPGEnc and/or an AVISynth script right? ^_^

Anyway, I'm sure I disappointed a lot of you, so I apologize. But for those who were looking for a conventional ripper here ya go:

A few of you probably already knew of FFX movie extractor (FFX2mov.) I just found another tool, possibly a movie extractor, for Metal Gear Solid 2 (MGS2)

Head to the PS2MODZ Paradise @ http://www.alucard.cc/ and download the following tool made by PS2MODZ:

Name: Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty : MOVIE.DAT Extractor

Desc.: Tool to extract MOVIE.DAT into its component 67 PSS files.

I don't know if this is a movie ripper or what, coz I don't have the game DVD (and I'm not going to buy one just to try with this tiny util.) So,if there's anyone here who has a MGS2 DVD, have a try with this tool and tell us your results plzthnx.

Ciao.

jbone's still wrong if we're talking only about anime. In which case, the answer is normally between 23976 - 11988 words per second. Sometimes less depending on the series.

Look at the dates on this post: this was frmo OVER A MONTH ago, long before I created my signature...

Ok, think I better clear a few things up.

First off, forget what I said about real-time stuff. It's true that much is real-time rendered, however, there is some pre-rendered stuff in every game. It's simply easier on the PS2's hardware.

Final Fantasy has some prerendered stuff (all of which is in the Sphere Theater). You can definitely tell what is prerendered because the characters look much more realistic.

Same goes for Metal Gear Solid 2. I can't really say what is prerendered because everything in the game is animated (well, maybe except for some footage at the end) and game scene actors are not used so it's hard to tell. What I'm guessing is that the opening and ending clips are pre-rendered.

The tool for FFX that ek1 suggested definitely works (especially if it works on MY computer).
As for the MGS2 tool, I have a feeling that it does work, however I myself haven't gotten it to work. I get this weird run-time or C++ error.

Sorry for any misinterpretations this may have caused.

I ran the tool (altho I don't have the game DVD) it didn't ask for DVD drive letter like FFX and gave a runtime err., so I guess the trick is to copy movie.dat into the directory that contain the mgs2 tool.

Well some good news and some bad news...

Good news: Yay, it worked

Bad news: Can't find a converter that'll read the PSS files....

I've tried PSSPlay and PS2Play but both don't seem to recodnise the darn things.

So if someone can figure this little thing out, then I'm sure thousands of people are going to think you're a god. ^_^

For lack of anything better to suggest, try loading the PSS files in FlasKMPEG.

Or maybe they really aren't (MPEG2) PSS (which would be really bad news.) Try look & compare all the files header in hex viewer see if there r some patterns in there.

Heheh, nice try doki....but i actually tried cause im desperate, but with no luck.

If anyone else knows how to read in a hex viewer then please go ahead and then tell us what happens. I have no idea how to use one.

I REALLY hope that they aren't in some other form than MPEG-2. But knowing how most other things work in the world I wouldn't be surprised.
