DVD-Rom not playing VCDs

Postby usagisailor » Sun Dec 07, 2003 2:22 pm

For some odd reason, my DVD rom doesn't like to read a great majority of VCDs that I own. (They're recorded on CD-Rs) Therefore, I can't watch them. Is anyone else having this problem?

Weird.. it might be that the software doesn't like VCDs. You can always watch them using Windows Media Player or other media players.

That's the strange part about it though.... It won't even read them, let alone play them on ANY program!!!

You mean they don't show up in Windows Explorer (or, if you're not using Windows, whatever your file manager program is)? If they do, then you can always play them in WMP... if they don't, then there might be something wrong with the CD itself.

If your computer's got another CD-but-not-DVD drive, have you tried using that instead and opening the files in WMP?

it could be the way the vcd's are formated (like crap) or it could be you got a bad dvd rom, WMP wont play my VCD's either but Power DVD (use the trial) seems to play them fine for me

actualy it depends on what type of cd and certian things it has like copy protection, encoding (DAO, JOILET, stuff like that) and other stuff. for exaple, when i put medal of honour (allied assault) or max payne 2 in my dvd drive they dont work and prety much act like the cd's are corupted, but when i put them in my crapy 12x burner (32x read) they work fine

VCDs arent "formatted". Its just a directory structure. You can always just open the main video.dat file in media player if you have the mpeg codec installed to play dvds. You can get any of the demo programs for dvds, such as windvd, and use the codec after the trial period is expired. Media player will still use it. Just open the .dat file from the vcd. If media player wont open a .dat file (some versions wont), copy it to the hd, and rename it to .mpg and it will work fine.
