Prices At Best Buy

Postby TaranT » Thu Nov 20, 2003 4:48 am

What's with the DVD prices at Best Buy? They want $30 for the new Cardcaptor movie #2 special edition. And $34 for Last Exile - that's the DVD only (!), not the box set with figurine. And even $30 for Chobits 5.

It's not just anime, either. The new Two Towers gift box (the one with the nude statue :o) is on sale for $60, but Costco has it for $50. The new James Bond box sets are (supposedly) on sale for $85. Costco wants only $65.

On the good side, The Princess Blade was only $13. Guess it pays to shop around more.

debit card if possible, all you need is a checking account at most banks, and they will give you one.

Not necessarily. The typical price for a new-release at Costco (around here, that is) is about $18. That's cheaper than the normal price at Best Buy - $20 - except during the first week. For example, I got Matrix: Reloaded during its first week for $15. And online prices are often cheaper than Costco as well.

On the title topic, I spot-checked about a dozen new anime titles at one of the local Best Buy's this afternoon. All of them were priced at full retail. Except for Last Exile (DVD, not box), which appears to be priced above retail: $34 vs. $30 listed on the Geneon Web site.

At Fry's, the $5 off-of-retail appears to still be the rule.

Really? I was at my local Best Buy just a week or two ago, and I saw a few anime titles with what looked like pretty good prices... like the Boogiepop Phantom Ultra Edition box set (includes the 2-CD soundtrack) for $52.99, and the Kare Kano box set for just around $100. Of course, me being poor college student, I didn't buy anything...

Well, CostCo has really cheap prices on things because they try to make up for their low prices by selling more units. Best Buy does this too of course, but not to the same extent. The last time I went to Best Buy, it looked like most of their anime was 20% off at least, some were more (I think they have some deal with ADV because those were discounted even more).

The trick to best buy is to get stuff the first week it comes out, because it's usually on sale. Costco is more consistant but BB often beats costco prices in the 1st week >_>

Course BB usually doesn't give much of a deal on most anime, since they don't buy tons of it. Last 1st week deal I recall was spirited away :\

I usually go here to check online prices

I was at a Best Buy last Friday and saw Argentosoma 6 stickered at $29.99. This was a new release (12/2). It's also on their Web site at $29.99. On the other hand, the Web site has Aoshi 5 at $5 off. So, I don't know what's going on, but it appears the standard $5 discount may be phased out.

We've got four Best Buy's in the local metro area. I've noticed this pattern at two of them. The others are further away, but I'll probably have a chance to check them out over the next month or so.

Better news: Best Buy online has a 20% off sale on all Geneon/Pioneer anime ... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmcat18800050009&type=category&cmp=
Through Dec 20 and online orders only.
