Considering it's not very supported in OS's yet and there's barely no MBs that support it and it's very expensive, you won't be getting it.

Actually, the Athalon 64 is x86-64. In other words it is completely compatable with all existing 32 bit software. In fact, a prototype chip that was tested on the T-Break forums got 20k at stock speeds.

And as far as motherboards are concerned, I doub the lack of motherboards is going to make that much of a difference considering the ones that there currently are will get the job done quite nicely.

Unfortunately amd always lags way behind intel when it comes to video processing and encoding :(

Megahert for megahert the XP's have beat out intel. and the only way for anyone to get an intel chip faster than the new athalon 64 involves a massive overclock of intels most high end chips.

i heard intel was also working on better hyperthreading technology, but i'd rather play a 64bit game.

so far intel is trying to market new P4s with a bigger cach that is barely affect the performance, and the new prescot chips are having so many heating issues that they probably won't break the 4 GHz marker.

yea, they are working on that, and P5...P5 is supposed to be the last pentuim, but they are gonna keep making upgrades for it.

Thanks to its ideal configuration and use of the best components, the P4 3.2 in the Extreme Edition (actually a Xeon labeled 'P4') wins the performance crown. Its former gaming weakness against the Athlon 64 has been ironed out by the 2 MB L3 cache. The AMD Athlon 64 FX-51 is only marginally slower. Especially with 3D games, both the 1 MB L2 cache as well as the fast memory access (HyperTransport) help it decisively beat competitor Intel P4 3.2 (standard edition).

To see a major difference, people will need to wait for software that takes full advantage of 64 bit proccessing.

64, 96 and 128 bit OS's hare already in use; the Hitochi Processor is 128 bit and great for games, but that's about it!!

The nice thing about 64 bit and higher is that we can finally weed-out MicroSoft ^^

Uh, it doesn't matter what the OS and processor can do if the software isn't programmed around them. I doubt you would be able to play any games on a new processor built around purely on a 64 bit architecture.

My company is getting an AMD 64 computer and myself and the other people in my department are going to give it a test drive. Is there anything in particular anyone would be interested to know about it? I can add it to an informal to do list.

When windows 64 comes out I doubt the P4 EE will maintain it's performance crown. And also try to remember, the athalon 64's are going to keep getting increases in clockspeed. They have a future. The people at intel are fighting to get higher clockspeeds for the P4 and are barely getting anywhere. The Prescotts are getting 64 degrees celcius at stock speeds and perform worse than the existing chips at the same clock speeds. So while the P4 has the crown for the time being this victory is going to be short lived. As clock speeds increase and 64 bit software gets released the Athalon 64 is REALLY going to shine.
