I need help with buying a tv

Postby Tash » Sat Aug 30, 2003 8:45 am

I really don't know a good place to ask this but its going to be here.

I am getting a new tv, but me and my dad are having an arguement on gettong analog or digital hdtv. He says that analog is better for cable, and that digital is only good for movies and direct tv. Should I get a analog tv since we will only be watching cable tv?

Unless you have digital cable, get a good ol' analog TV. Not only is the visual difference not very noticable, the price drop is very nice.

Well, more accurately the question probably shoud be if your dad should get a standard definition TV (4:3) or a HDTV (either 4:3 or 16:9).

Since your buying a new TV, I would highly recommend making sure that it has Component-In jacks (3 jacks for video). The second thing is to make sure it will properly letterbox (if it's 4:3) 16:9 content fed on the Component-In jacks. Other than that, you would be just fine buying a standard definition TV.

The reason for checking the Component-In features is that in the next couple of years DTV will be the standard and the equipment best utilizes the Component input on TVs and it will be mostly 16:9 aspect ratio.

Personally, I'm waiting to buy a new TV until the 16:9 HD CRT TVs come down in price a little more.

I don't think price is an issue here, as long as its under 1500$

Is digital cable adelphia cable? Because I have adelphia.

This is one we are looking at buying...forget price its atleast 300$ cheaper at store.

We had a projection TV before but you can't view it from sides or any different angle from straight on.

your not going to find much under HDTV under $2300.00 without spending another $500.00 for the FOX, ABC, RCA converter box!

Zenith doesn't even offer the decoder box - anymore ( in the US )

The screen I have is 19:8 and it came with the Converter built-in . . $3,400.00
which I also use as my main Computer Monitor.

- even though Baseball and Football will be transmitted in HDTV ONLY, don't
count on other TV show's being 100% HDTV until January 2004 and screw
the idea of regular TV being able to see anything without a Digital Converter
after April of 2005.

If you rally want a newer TV ( 4:3 ) then find a Pawn Shop T_T - they're price's
are getting extreamely cheep - on purpose! ( they know what's coming !!!
