DON'T RIP-OFF THE AMVs of OTHERS!

Postby Petro » Thu Aug 15, 2002 12:27 pm

Now I'm not talking about just using similar scenes, or maybe even the same music, I'm talking about when people cut scenes directly from the AMVs of others and put them to different music, calling it their own. :x

An example of this is thecia's new video, which has scenes taken directly from my video "Dedicated to Sarah" (see my a-m-v.org profile for the video)

How do I know they're directly from my video? I used fades on very low framerate footage and looped some footage to create scenes that didn't exist in "Love Hina" I also took lq footage, cleaned it up, and enlarged it. These exact scenes were in his video - Including the entire last 30 seconds of my video: Not even any editing! :x

Does anyone else besides me find this to be totally WRONG?

Let me know.

I've downloaded and watched both videos, and...

Wow.

Just...wow. It's hard to believe somebody would have the audacity to do such a thing. However, on the Internet, I guess morals no longer matter...

Bleh.
The clips he stole don't even work all that well for Savage Garden's "I Want You".

I'm waiting for the day someone rips off SRV. I wouldn't blame them, my video is encoded better than the fansubs I've seen floating around, but it would be obvious in a second where they were from.

Yes, I'd be annoyed - especially if they used scenes from the psychadelia section as the effect was written from scratch specifically for that scene.

Oh I wouldn't mind if it was just footage, but it was multiple scenes at a time, with no editing. ^^; Anyway, my rage is gone now. Now it's just disgust

I dunno, I guess it would sort of urk me, but whatever. If they think my video is that good that they have to use scenes from it, then what the hell.

I once sent an email to someone who I noticed stealing clips. I tried to explain how it not only demeans their own talent by stealing someone else's work, but it doesn't teach them a thing. Then, they either have to keep stealing or develop some real talent. .....And that was not received well by the anonymous thief.

They don't see anything wrong because "no one owns it, you took it from the amv companies anyway" He was right in that he could have just remade every single fade and overlay....but I put them up against each other on a timeline and the pieces they ripped (off 2 well known videos and they combined them into their 1 video) matched pretty darn well. Like down to the frames well.

So, bringing them here to flame will do no good since they don't see anything wrong with it in the first place. would be nice though......

I guess it's *just* editing but after you go through and conceive it and render it and all, an amv becomes 'yours' because you put so much of yourself in it. Most people have a style that is obvious to see so that shows you put a little piece of yourself in there. To have people steal intellectual property is mostly about principle it seems....but still something worth mentioning Petro :) My sympathy for you, at least it's simmered down to disgust now :P

By the way, I still remember the way your video was recieved at the Otakon screening a year ago (was recieved really well) so that shows how memorable your video was

Thanks Misty ^_^ I honestly didn't mind for the first few scenes I noticed (ie the first 18 seconds of the video) but unfortunately it was a little more than just a few scenes here and there. I'm over it now, thanks. ^_^

Ironically, when I was downloading the video I was thinking "gee, he must be using good footage for the video size to be this big in avi. I wish I had the DVD footage when I made my video" lol. looking back at it, it would have been pretty funny if it wasn't my video footage

Anyway, I'm done on this topic now. Thanks your your support ^^

When the fireworks part of your video came on, people started cheering :)

It was really impressive, great job...um...a year later. Yeah, Otakon was this weekend last year wasn't it ^_~

No, I'm pretty sure Otakon was the end of July again. A week earlier actually. I remember because I couldn't go since it was my aniversary with my (then) gf. Guess what her name was, and guess which AMV she didn't appreciate ~_^
