Desynch usually comes from a weak Video card or out of date drivers;
however I will agree that the Audio should play normally and it should be the Video that fall's behind if the Video card is weak!

I've just never heard of the Audio falling -behind- the Video
( that's a new one on me! )

Now . . I have noticed that the newer the operating System - the longer it takes to start the Video; but . . . desynched Audio?

please explain 8) now you've got me curious 8)

Do you read the posts above you before you post? There is a reason the video and audio de-synch. Read and drink deeply of the knowledge placed before you.

CAN throw it off.

I've never had the problem. JSR was VBR, I never heard about synch issues.

well yeah if you do that it'd mess up. Something about how the frames in VBR are written differently as compared to CBR and ABR.

We were bored and took 7 computers which we thought were optimized and
dropped the AMD Barton Processers for Duron 950's
dropped the ATI video's for Trident 9680's
dropped the Yamaha audio's for SoundBlaster/Crystals
and yup - BOOM!!! desynch Video everytime.
It wasn't until the Video cards were less than 4meg that this begin to happen.

These test's were conducted using different operating systems on each computer:
Win95, Win98, Win98se, WinME, Win2k, WinXP and Mandrake 6.5
All computers had 512meg dual sticks of RAM.
All computers had 40gig Maxtor Ultra DMA 100 hard drives.
All computers were configured with the same Codec's and Video's to play,
and yet not one of them had any problems of the Audio falling behind the Video!

- This is why I said, "ok 8) now you've got me curious 8)
because we could not re-create this desynch Audio error! - sorry!

your thoughts ???

The problems you are talking about were probably caused by a)video cards that didn't have any overlay b)old crappy video drivers.

Seriously when was the last time you saw a computer come equipped with a video card that had less than 4MB of ram on it? I think about 5 - 7yrs is about right. Any new computer will have a decent video card on it. One that atleast does 2D overlay.

There is a known problem with using varible frame size audio codecs inside AVI files. So ABR & VBR both have problems.

There are still ways to work with files that have VBR audio. You can use Vdubmod to cut sections out while keeping the VBR audio intact. Then you can demux the vbr mp3 stream, decompress it and then remerge it back in. If need be :P

Or you could just lower your post-processing settings.

What the fuck are you talking about man? I went from Win 98 to Win 2K to Win XP and the access and start times DROPPED!! As in they DECREASED!! As they should.

Post processing *will* slow down video decoding and make the video lag on slower machines. I know my old athlon 800 playing a divx5(or maybe it was 4) file would lag terribly on my music video if postprocessing was up to full.

:/

Kthulhu has a Duron 800mhz machine and he can playback 640x480 XviDs w/no desynch.

Also the problem in hand is that ABR & VBR audio was not meant to be used inside an AVI files. AVIs don't like them. When people try to use ABR for their audio it usually causes desynch. Messing with the video post-processing settings will not fix desynch that is occuring from ABR/VBR audio.

Well the thing is, on my older machine(a 533 celeron with 512 ram) if you try to play videos encoded in divx 4-5, the audio and video de-synchs. If you go and play with DivX's postprocessing settings in their shitty little gui, you can lower the quality and all that. The videos still de-synch but not as badly. Divx player is integrated with its gui so that it auto sets the PP to whatever the machine can handle... I had to deal with these problems until I got my new machine... and now nothing lags short of full uncompressed.

Yeah that can definitely happen. But I was replying to post it. He obviously was putting old funky hardware in a more modern machine. Yeah I could see your 533Mhz getting choked up on some things. But a 950Mhz Duron should have no problem.

Also even on my machine, if I encode in ABR it will desynch on me.

Klinky - sorry about the delay in replying; I've hit the Jack-Pot in DeSynch'd Audio cards

ummm . Back when the 386 DX33's were released, there was talk of having Video and Audio cards with their own Processors - to ease the burdon on the Main Processor.

Q: did these cards ever make it to the market place - or were they just rumours?
( if they are not rumours, are they available today? )

Umm almost every piece of hardware on the market for video and audio uses its own (albeit small) proc... its been that way for like 5 years...
