Off Topic forums are getting cluttered

Postby SephirothJenova » Tue Aug 13, 2002 9:59 am

There's a lot of junkie posts in the Off Topic forum that should really be in the Way Off Topic forum. I don't know how you would correct this, but it's getting really annoying to see that all of the topics on the screen have new posts on them.

I dunno... "wacko weird crazy" was never defined, so how do you judge the "level of off-topicness"?

What if Off-Topic was for "serious" things like "what's a good brand of printer?" or "I don't like my job", and Way Off-Topic was for "silly" things like "hi hi look at me pay attention to me c'mon I'm new!" or "L00K AT MI KEWL FUNNEE PIC HHA HA HA!!!1"

Of course, "serious" off-topic discussions can degenerate into "silly" ones...

Yeah I don't think people even notice "wacko weird crazy" anymore. I mean, they don't distinguish between them. I think they should make another forum called "Off Topic for Bucket and Temjin". Then all the craziest posts will be redirected into a forum "Trash" so to speak.

well its all off topic and really no one cares to notice if it belongs into the off topic or the way off topic forum.

::shrug:: its not like there's a guide on what kind of subjects you can post and where to post them.

o_0! ::lightbulb:: maybe someone should make a guide to that....

No! I leave SovietAMV.org because of censorship! Now AmericaAMV.org doing same thing! BREWSKI!

The off-topic forums are intended for the masses to post whatever the hell they feel like. Old topics get pushed down, anyway. Frankly, all this necroposting is more annoying than topic clutter, which is why I suggested a dead thread expiration, which would either lock the thread from more posts (ideal), or delete them.

Maybe we need more mods, also.

Uh,threads are SUPPOSED to have new posts in them. And who decides what's off topic and what's way off topic?

Necroposting's part of the clutter, though. Fix that and it'll only help matters.

Trying to regulate the off-topic forums would be a nightmare and a half, I think. We'd need more mods, and I think it'd piss off users if a mod decided to delete a thread for no reason other than "it adds to clutter". There'd be hash flying back and forth over what one mod or another did, and the off topic forums would just degenerate into bickering and grousing about the site.

And I'm not sure we have any good mod material from the userpool right now.Maybe jbone and Ermac, and that's it. And I doubt either one wants a full time mod position. Speak up otherwise.

Um, no.

"Way Off-Topic" is for the masses to post whatever the Hells they feel like. (Examples: MY SPLEEN IS YELLOW! Anyone pee yet tonight?)

"Off-Topic" is meant for things that don't fall into the general AMV topics, but which are on at least somewhat fo a similar track. (Examples: Anyone see that new movie? What type of printer should I buy? When's the next Star Trek convention?)

If both forums were intended to be the same thing, then there would be one forum and not two.

There are moderators, you just can't see them 'cause they're hidden.

Post subjects are a waste of time.

Then let there be one forum instead of two! Seriously, no one is forcing anyone to go to the off-topic threads. So long as the general AMV forums aren't getting cluttered with junk, who cares how much stuff gets piled up in there? Phade maybe, and he can delete old/dead threads to save disk space and bandwidth if he wishes.

As for not enough mod material, what I mean is, if people want the off-topic threads to be policed more, it'll probably take more mods to do so and do it quickly. I can't think of many people on the site who would be willing to do so or up to the task.

And I KNOW we have mods. Read above.

What if I wantt o ask the people _here_ about their opinions on, say, Itanium-2 vs. Opteron, but I don't want the thread spammed to Hells without anyone ever looking at the thread's intent?

Make a new hardware forum in either the AMV or Video section, then. It'd still be relevant to the site's subject. Or pick some more mods out of the general site populace so you have 24/7 coverage of the forums.

What's your solution to the off-topic forums?

Well sure, that'd do the trick, but isn't it a bit overkill?

Seriously, if it's that aggravating, I'd like to read a solution. So far all I read from these posts is a bunch of whining and rhetoric. "People are making way off-topic threads in the off-topic forums and it annoys me!" "The off-topic forums are not for crap, they're for printer opinions and movie discussions!", etcetera etcetera.
