Virtualdub doesn't natively support it - you have to install VFAPI which not everyone does (I don't anymore)

I prefer the avisynth with MPEG2DEC option as well - for one it's much much quicker and more stable than the vfapi methods.

for ripping from dvd to divx I use XMpeg (very fast), when the quality isn't good I use guardian knot etc.

for ripping into vcd i encode the cutted vob in Tmpegenc

for amv-scenes I use FlasKMpeg

yeah I couldn't figure out how to get avisynth too work, or how to edit straight from vobs... but I use CladDVD XP and FlaskMPEG.
