I am a remuxing retard... please help

Postby SarahtheBoring » Fri Jul 11, 2003 2:29 pm

'scuse my language; I am highly frustrated and the alliteration made me do it. :/

Anyway, I am following to the letter the instructions in the guide under:

Encoding your MP3 Audio in Virtualdub/Nandub

...in order to encode my HuffYUV original into DivX, then add back in the wav sound that I had previously ripped from the Huff copy. I've already encoded the video and am now trying to put the sound back in using a compressed form so as to not make my video ridiculously huge (been there, done that).

I am using VDub.

I am FAILING MISERABLY.

I have tried this three times, and every time there's no sound in the finished AVI. The video looks fine, and the wav I'm trying to use as an audio source is fine. But it keeps exporting with no sound, even though while it dubs, it says that XXXX space is being used for audio (the wording escapes me, but you know what I mean). But there's no audio.

I've also checked "Do Not Correct MPEG Layer III" as the note says, and this doesn't seem to make a difference either.

I swear I'm doing this as it says, or at least as I understand it. And considering that I have to do this to like six videos in a row (I'm re-encoding everything I have, crap though it is, for various reasons) it's very frustrating.

So, what am I doing wrong, possibly? Besides making videos at all?

. . your trying too hard ^^

if your audio is 44k stereo then the set-up is complicated, however if it is 48k stereo then you need to set 3 things:

1) Audio / interleave / check the box . . 0 . . 1 . . click frame . . and delay of 0 < enter >

2) Audio / Full Process

3) Audio / compression / MP3-Layer . . . . I'd say 48k @ 192k speed

. . this assumes that your Audio is already mixxed IN the original AVI ^^

if you are using 44k stereo, then things become complicated . . T_T

for THAT you will need: Audio / ( choose either AVI -or- WAV as the source )
then Audio / Convertion / and tell it what you want it to be < enter >

now follow the 3 steps agin ^^

It is 48K (I was under the impression that anything lower than max. sounded like crap to most people... people whined about audio quality when I used 48K stereo 16-bit wavs X_x)

0 frame interleaving? I had it set at 1, so I can try that.

Got full processing, got the MP3 part set up (I was using the LAME codec).

I'll try the interleaving part. Thanks!

Correction: interleave 1 frame, preload 0. Now that I have it in front of me, I see what you mean. Heh, I'll see if this works.

hehe - let's clear that up ^^;;;;

44k stereo WAV
48k stereo WAV

the speed you want your MP3 to sound like is 160k to 320k

^^

the problem here is that there are too many numbers saying the same thing! T_T

your CD plays at 44.1k stereo audio, the MP3 of it sounds best at 320k bits per second . . . ? still confused ? . . . 0_0 - I think I just got your point !

ok . .

160kBits/ @ 48,000 stereo \
192kBits/ @ 48,000 stereo - ------ these are all at 48k audio wav's
224kBits/ @ 48,000 stereo /

160kBits/ @ 44,000 stereo \
192kBits/ @ 44,000 stereo - ------ these are all at 44k audio wav's
224kBits/ @ 44,000 stereo /

I know the 160/192 parts etc. are different from the 48K part. I'm not an idiot. Please don't treat me like one, thank you very much.

ugh... just forget it. If I'm going to be treated like a fucking moron I'm not going to bother asking.

But FYI, genius, it turns out that it HAD sound all along, but that I have to jump around with the Seek bar before it will play. It refuses to play straight from the beginning, but it will play from half a second or so from the beginning.

But, you know, since I need to be taught my fucking ABCs apparently, I'm too stupid to have known THAT too.

I never said you were anything . . I assume nothing!

if I have made you feel small, then I'm sorry.

there is no way for me to know "who know's what" without testing you first.

T_T how did you loose your Audio by doing a search through you video ! ?? T_T

It's okay. Sorry about freaking out. I am pretty stupid; I just hate to be reminded of it. :?

I didn't lose the audio by searching through it; I gained the audio.

Maybe it's because the audio starts RIGHT at the start of the video? Hmm. Maybe I could try that preload thing...

[continuing - you don't have to answer]

Okay, I'll assume I can't use Lame despite the fact that people were bitching over in some other forum that if you use anything else your MP3 sound will sound like crap... -_- I'll just accept that nothing I do will ever shut people up, ever. So moving on.

3) Audio / compression / MP3-Layer . . . . I'd say 48k @ 192k speed

Under the MP3 compression menu there is no 192kb ... anything, at all. Anywhere. At any place at any time. The only option attached to 48k is "48kBit/s, 24,000 Hz"

which needless to say is like 1/3 what was suggested, which fricking figures. I'll try that, I guess. :(

Then lame ACM isnt installed properly.

Those values are the windows defaults - the ones where they dont have to pay licensing to Frauenhoffer.

You dont want MP3 you want LAME Mp3, it will be a different listing.

I think that vdub's default is to preload 500ms of audio before video starts. Perhaps resetting the preload to that would help.

I had one encode where the sound just would NOT work with a one frame interleave, but when I told vdub to interleave every four frames, it worked fine. I have no idea why that worked, it just did.

Suggestion summary:

Enable interleaving: checked
Preload: 500ms
Interleave: 1 ( or try 2, then 4)
Skew correction: 0ms
Do not correct mp3 streams: checked

I'm a little slow this morning, so maybe this was addressed already, but choose 44.1 or 48Khz settings in the Lame mp3 list to match whatever the rate of your wav file is. That can be verified by loading your muxed master in vdub and checking the file information under the file menu, or checking the already demuxed wav in any mp3 playing program that displays bitrate. 320 is rather large for a downloadable version, and 128-160 CBR is usually sufficient, IME.

^^ please note that I'm not assuming you're stupid, I'm just trying to be complete for anyone else who might read this thread with a similar issue.

Good luck

arg. Well, he said MP3, so I tried MP3. And it did work... so that's at least something. And that file's on the Carrot now, so it's too late to change that one. I'm not sure if the sound sucks, because my headphones suck. So everything sounds terrible anyway. :P

For future reference, though - if the codec isn't installed properly that's a problem...

And of course you're not assuming I'm stupid, because that sailed approx. 600 yards over my head. Fear not. ^_^

So you don't have the choice of Lame mp3 in your vdub audio compression menu, like this?
Image

If not, all I can suggest is making sure you have the latest version of amv.app downloaded, or get it again, and pay special attention to the documentation about where to have it install that & other stuff related to vdub.
Heh, typical Windows answer to most problems, umm...reinstall the software... :?

Also, the setings for the interleaving I described are pretty much as follows:
Image

The above + having the "don't correct mp3 streams" box checked under vdub's preferences are what works for me.

If you want to try reinstalling LAME, download it from here:

http://www.dvdstuff.gr/downloads/LameACM_3.93.1.zip

unzip and right-click lameACM.inf and choose install
